From all the bad words about Ultima 9, i am actually enjoying playing through it so far, it has a decent setting/atmosphere and the music is great, plus voice acting in full. I understand that when it was first released at retail it was full of game breaking bugs and ran poorly. Also people disliked it because it wasn't the same sort of rpg as the rest of the series.

As i haven't played any of the other Ultima games, i don't know what Ultima 9 does to tarnish the reputation. Without any spoilers, does it change the storyline or something?

I heard that Ultima 8 wasn't quite up to par either.

I'd also like to know which of the Ultima games is considered the best, and why?

It butt fucks the story pretty bad, otherwise it's a decent RPG.

I think most people are going to say 7 is the best, I'd probably agree.

From what I've seen, it messes things up pretty badly. From characters being completely different, to things that don't make sense. The famous meme 'What's a Paladin?' feels like a new rallying cry for those who dislike how they changed it (It makes the Avatar look really damn stupid).

From what I heard, the devs were pressed to make it easier for new players to jump into things, but at 9 games in, that's just not going to happen.

7, from what I've heard is the best, but anything after 4 is tied together to a degree.
I guess if you consider it a very extensive and big budget piece of fan fiction it might not be that bad.

How do you REALLY feel?
Sorry, I'm just goofing. I actually have a tremendous amount of respect for someone who can express themselves so eloquently and no I'm not being sarcastic, I really mean that.
I actually liked Ultima 8 a lot. The patches took out all of the stupid platforming stuff, a lot of the puzzles were really interesting and had multiple solutions, and while it wasn't as nearly as interactive as 7 there was still a lot of stuff to play around with. The story was subtle, and pretty minimalist, but good. And there was tons of atmosphere.

Honestly it's way more playable than a lot of old DOS games.

It's not as good as Ultima 7, but Ultima 7 was one of those singular, magical experiences that you really shouldn't judge other things by.

Never played Ultima 9. Watched someone else playing it on livestream. It looked... something.
I played Ultima 9 without much of a background of Ultima. Prior to it, I played Ultima 6 and although I had reached mid-game in that one, I didn't finish it.

I think Ultima 9 had potential, but it was utterly a tiresome game. The travel was aggravating. Killing giant rodents was a pain. The writing was OK, but the general experience brought everything down for me. I could not stomach it at all after a while.
I've got all of them. Guess I'd better sit down and start playing them. Good or bad I feel like I'm missing out here.

Woah! Are you going to start from Ultima 1?

It would be nice to know if it's easy to get into or not. Strangely, because of Ultima 9, i am interested in the rest of the Ultima series.

I forgot that Ultima 4 and Ultima Worlds 1+2 are free on GOG. What are they like?

Ultima 8 was my favorite Ultima game. I felt it was more atmospheric than the rest of the series.
It's tolerable. It's not as bad as people say. It's bad for an Ultima game, but it's quite ok game in general.
Ultima 9 was a milestone in terms of the detailed open world it presented to you. this hadn't been done before with such an attention to detail and with such fabulous graphics. THAT's why Ultima 9 is a classic.

it was basically the Crysis of its day.

Absolutely this... I loved this game (even in the broken state), only point I hated was, that the game was unforgiving... if you jump wrong, you died... game over

I started 1 and it was soooooo old. I've played worse. Hell, I've played worse new games, but the urge to move up has been too great and I've just got to. I started 7 last night but I couldn't get anything done without a manual which I just downloaded and I'll try again later.

As for Underworld those are pretty cool. Again, have a key reference close at hand so when you get attacked you aren't looking down trying to find the correct key for attack and don't end up accidentally trying to 'take' the monster. Don't laugh. There I was getting the piss beat out of me and the screen keeps telling me "You cannot take that."

Lol. It's odd, as i grew up with games from the early 90's, yet i still find those kind of control schemes iffy (take, grab, use etc). Still, with some effort i reckon it can be learnt. I managed to mostly understand Victoria 2 without checking any manuals/lets plays, so if i can understand that, anythings possible. Apart from tex murphy 1's driving sequences!
