Hey guys, I bought WD My Passport SE 1TB USB 3.0/2.0 external HDD...

Now, I updated the firmware to the latest version. And formatted the drive using the normal right-click -> format option in Windows 7. And now the drive is totally empty, it doesn't have ANY software on it.

I read lots of bitching about some must-have software to be able to use the drive normally, but hey, mine works just fine without it!

Have WD removed the requirements, and made the software optional? Or did I screw up somthing?

Testing the drive right now, will report back in few minutes.

I never needed to use My Passport trough some software or something like that. I always plug it in and that's that.
I guess it's like my iRiver where it installed some application which I thought was mandatory to use it, but it turned out you could use it just fine without it. Direct copy.
I take it you mean 1TB, right? :P

News to me. I don't see why you'd need any specialist software. It should work like any other drive. I had a WD external and had no problems using it... save for when it died. But that wasn't a software issue.

Bleeding edge tech!
Hahhaha! 1TB! :D -fixeeeeeed.

It is strange though, I see a lot of reviews bashing WD for the mandatory software. I don't get it, as the drive FINE without it.

Normal copy-paste, just like with an USB memory stick.

It is a bug. The recommended price was 135 pounds. I checked it few hours ago.

I had a drive like that and they used some proprietary commands to wake it up after it went to sleep. So, it would work fine outside of Windows until it went to sleep at which point it wouldn't wake up again.

I dunno, man. I formatted the drive, and now it is clean. There is absolutely nothing on it. Tested it with a one 11GB file, it copied on it, and I can copy it back from it.

I hope it is not like your case, as the drive so far has not fallen asleep. :D

That was several years ago, so I'm not sure that they're still doing that. But it sucks that you can't count on a product to be actively incompatible with OSes not listed as compatible.

The software that comes with wd external drives is mainly used if you are Mac user to set up a backup plan and track data about the usage, essentially, all external drives work with windows, linux and os X operating systems out of the box :) Enjoy your new drive and report on performance

TBH The WD s/ware is just for automatically backing up files and some stuff to work with Macs. Can't see there is any stuff you would actually need.

Formatted as NTFS, it copies a 1.4GB file in 15-20 seconds. I like it.

It is perfect for my girl to use it. :D
