Besides, the Gold Box had much better combat and encounter design.
They're all good games worth playing, though,

you are wrong, this game is far better than every SSI Goldbox game, in terms of depth, longevity, story, just to mention.

with longevity I mean the hours spent to beat the game.

As for depth I can't see who Dragon Wars should be more complex. Sure, it has skills, but Gold Box games have a more detailed combat system.

I dunno...I used one and a half week to complete Dragon Wars. The Gold Box games are more variable in size; I used 1-2 weeks on most of them.

all I can say is that Dragon Wars offers a more satisfyng experience than every SSI Gold, nothing else.

My opinion is that most of the Gold Box games offers a more satisfying experience than Dragon Wars. Not because Dragon Wars is bad, but because the Gold Box games are so good.
And for the record, when comparing playing times, that was through playing normally, not using a walkthrough to get complete the games ASAP.

Pools of Darkness is the hardest game I have ever played. That final boss man, it felt like I had just been trolled by SSI programmers.

I made some videos of the battles (problems with the sound, though, so I suggest muting it):

DOS version of DW is pretty bad graphically, so I'm not so sure about GOG getting if it isn't the Amiga or at least Apple 2gs version

I thought the game was freeware now as I was able to find it on a site that said it was no longer copyrighted laws.
