Miaghstir: I'm pretty sure none of them are Intel native (except, possibly, URU, after it had been rereleased a couple times under different names, but even then it's just the multiplayer component), and thus they won't run on Lion and newer.

Well, I am not usually a fan of 3d adventure games. However, being a kid at heart, I might try out The Manhole: Masterpiece Edition.

Good promo for those who like adventure games, but not much good for anyone else. I thought GOG was about balance. Will pass on this one.

Nice! Myst was the first computer game I ever bought at the store, and it and Riven and still among the greatest puzzle games of all time IMO. (They also both do an excellent job of storytelling through environment rather than exposition.) I already own both of them on disc, but I'm happy to pick up the digital versions (especially if it means no disc-swapping in Riven).

URU was an abomination and should be avoided by all sentient beings. Not only was it laughably buggy, not only did it completely trash the series' storyline, but the puzzles were just awful. An entire world whose only puzzle is to run around finding 100 invisible 'orbs' and clicking on them? A puzzle whose solution requires you to (spoiler) stand in place for ten minutes? Just... terrible.

I haven't played Myst V yet, but I've heard that it's closely tied to URU's storyline, so I'd appreciate hearing some thoughts on it from Myst fans who hated URU as much as I did.

Kunovski: just kidding, you should probably start with the first one... if you can see through the very old graphics (which you should if you're a GOG member ;) and actually love the game (it's puzzles and rules) and the story, you may continue with the sequels...
I've seen some screenshots, and the graphics don't bother me. But if the point of the games are the pretty graphics, then I'll go for the prettiest one.

That being said, which one is better, Myst or realMyst?

I've never played a Myst game before. Are the puzzles doable by mere mortals or am I likely to need online walkthroughs to get through these games?

If I did take advantage of the sale, should I get Myst: Masterpiece Edition or Real Myst? It looked like maybe Real Myst would be the best choice?

For a little over 12 bucks I could get either one or the other of the two I just asked about plus Riven, Uru: Complete Chronicles and Myst 5 so I am tempted to try them.

They must be famous for some reasons but I wonder would I like them too. I do love exploring new worlds and good stories. I'm just not sure if I'm up for very difficult puzzles if that is what these games feature.

Myst games are mostly about atmosphere (oh, the views!!! well, some of them :), so if the graphics don't bother you, you're ok...

I'm actually not entirely sure, I've only played the original first unupgraded Myst... but what I know is that one of them has a "free to walk around" system while the other has not.

I prefer the "not-free" version, a) as most of Myst games use it (you might be disappointed when you finish the first game and move to the second that has only the original "jump from one location to another" system), and b) because it's easier to spot hidden items/locations if you know "they're here somewhere" :D

No, the point of the games is definitely the genuinely challenging puzzles and the clever environmental storytelling; the pretty graphics are just a bonus.

As to Myst vs. RealMyst, it's a matter of preference, really; personally, I like the look of the original prerendered graphics much better than RealMyst's 3d environments. I never found RealMyst to be as immersive - the movement style always reminded my brain that I was moving around a computer-generated environment rather than an island. That being said, if you find it more immersion-breaking that you can't turn your head left and right, then maybe RealMyst is for you.

I enjoy Myst games as their atmosphere and stories are superb, but I wouldn't ever finish them without a walkthrough :) they are not that hard, it's just that most of the time you have no idea what to do or why do it (perfect example - you come across a panel with four buttons in a middle of nowhere; you press them, they make pretty noises, but you have no idea what they do and where, until of course you explore the whole area and find the right hint :o)

The puzzles are difficult, but not in the "unfairly complicated" sense or the "SO damn hard to find that hidden clickable hotspot" sense. They're hard in the sense that you will have to observe the world around you, take extensive notes (yes, you will need a notepad), and then sit and think about not only the clues you've found, but the world you're in and why certain things are the way they are. These are not games to be played in single sessions; they are games where you play until you get stuck, then you go take a bath and ruminate for a couple of hours, and the solution comes to you. If that sounds horrible to you, then these games probably wouldn't be your thing.

Ah, the Myst series. While I never really got into it (first person adventures, meh) I already have it on my shelf to give it maybe someday another try.

About the "this weeks on gog" episode: Das mit der deutschen Version von "The Critters Chronicles" ist in der Tat super. Vielen Dank und liebe Grüße zurück ;-)
