ET3D: It keeps amazing me how much life the idea of zombies has in it. I thought it would die in 2011, but it just keep coming back.
You mean it keeps rising from the grave?

Holyshit look how fast this one got funded. Zombies!!
Keep in mind that this is an expansion to their original game (ok part of it is kind of a sequel or stand alone expansion, but I won't get into semantics) which was funded by over $780,000. Anyone that got the first game, got an email the moment this kickstarter went live and that's where most of the initial funding came from.
Torment: Tides of Numenera KS is live and already managed to get 150K em half a hour:

They're at 750k now, and pledged!

It's a bit strange though that after years of not doing anything interesting, InXile is having 2 great projects that way. Were publishers really so unwilling to fund any of their RPGs?
If I didn't love PS:T so much, I'd wait for Wasteland 2 to come out before pledging more to their games, but it's not like I'm pledging money I can't afford to lose anyway.

It has been explained on both kickstarters. Their writers (mostly) have already finished their work on Wasteland 2, and are now sitting twiddling their thumbs, while the coders and artists are working. The idea is to get them working on the next project, so when Wasteland 2 is finished, the coders and artists can start working on Torment.

I'm not questioning that, I'm just wondering why InXile were reduced to making iOS games and such things for years if they were capable of managing 2 interesting RPG projects at once.
Have publishers really become so risk-averse when it comes to funding new projects?

Ah, apologies, misread your post.
There is some news going around that the guy who made Shenmue is thinking about doing a Kickstarter for Shenmue 3, if he can get the rights from SEGA. Doesn't seem likely to me, but it would be good to keep it in mind.

This brings the question of their next project when the writers (and concept artists ;) are done with Torment....?
And Torment is funded in only 6h
It's time to clone RPG designers, their projects are backed faster than their imagination is working.

"Brian Fargo @BrianFargo

I think we might be the fastest Kickstarter to 1 million. There is no better group than RPG players.

I'm still waiting for a werewolf fad...

I think that the answer is yes. It's not just being risk averse, it's a matter of return on investment. Planescape: Torment sold around 400k copies originally. This not only marks the project as risky but also the profit from that is probably not worth the risk for the publishers. On the other hand have just 20k of these fans pay an average of $50 in advance, and you have enough money to develop the game, and enough of a later market to sustain the developers.

I agree that werewolves > vampires > zombies. But you know, they're actually powerful and can fight, and gamers apparently much prefer brainless shamblers.
