Momo1991: People are actually using real money to buy cards.

For example, you can sell cards your games have dropped and those funds are only added to your Steam Wallet. Then you can use those funds to buy games. But if you don't use the proceeds from selling cards to buy games, Steam does indeed make money off of you when you turn around and buy more cards. That's scenario one...

Scenario two is when you add real funds to your Steam Wallet and then use those real funds to buy cards. Steam makes money off of you directly instead of indirectly with scenario one.

Does that make sense?

I had over 100 games with trading cards that I hadn't played before the summer sale - a few weeks before I began downloading and trying out over 50 games. Some went on my "must play soon!" list and some went to the "what the heck was I thinking?" list. In all, I accumulated over $40 before the summer sale and quite a bit more during the sale even with crafting a number of "summer sale" badges in order to participate in the team game thingy. Granted I could have had a few more cheap games instead of those badges but I had fun for a buck a day during those ten days and utlimately, this is exactly what it's all about for me - fun.

Initially I crafted a few game badges but I'm just not a digital card collector - games, yes - I might need an intervention- but cards, clothes, stuff in general...not so much. This might be a backlash to a mother that collected a nice retirement package worth of stuff..anyway, I digress.

Steam makes money off these cards or they would not have implemented such a massive scheme. It plays to many people's need to collect stuff whether that be high scores, achievements or cards and the attendant badges. Me, well I don't need no stinkin' badges - well maybe a couple ;-p

~oh, I do love me a 3 cent emoticon ;-p~

Yeah, I needed to boost my Steam level to be eligible for the game cards themselves and for the contest to win wishlisted games, so I made a badge for it. That's the only time I'm likely to do that though is if there is something tangible in it for me or to become eligible for something tangible, although I think I'm at level 10 now so I doubt they'll have entry requirements for stuff in the future that are higher than that so I'll probably just sit right tight at level 10 and sell all the stuff. I wonder if some of the cards sell for more than the games actually cost in these deep discount sales. Buy games and get paid money? Wouldn't surprise me. :)

Yeah, Steam implemented cards purely as a way to make money there's no question about that. :)
I should be studying, my final is tomorrow, but... meh, I don't feel like it.

Tormentfan: I wasn't talking about that, I'm talking about GOG's arbitrary decision to withold the game for reasons of their own.. Read the D:OS UPDATE THREAD for their admission. They actually withheld it from us... can you fucking believe that?

Getcomposted: If you were a Kickstarter backer, may I direct you to this post, which may help you. If you weren't, then I'm afraid there's nothing to do but wait. :(
Again...... being unable to dl it because of their 404 error isn't the issue.

Getcomposted: So the post says it all - why are you here on the forums instead of playing all those lovely games you got in the Summer Sale?
I'm not playing any games, because my newish video card freaked out and started causing boot failures. Now I'm left with a 7ish year old card that is barely better than the mobo's built in card, and couldn't run the Witcher copy that it came with when I bought it (Unlike my laptop's Integrated Intel chip with runs it very well which I never thought I would say) and I can't buy a new one, because I've been waiting in job limbo which has been a very uncomfortable place to hang out for the last couple of weeks. Thank you for asking such a painful question.

tinyE: Because I don't know anyone in the real world.
This.
Except my reason is not that I live in the middle of Bumblefuck. My reason is that I don't like to be in close proximity to other people. Let's call it a mental illness. But I still enjoy a little online socialization, so I'm here... Though I've been spending less and less time here lately because more and more people are starting to annoy the living shit out of me.

I'm weening myself off of these forums and learning to enjoy my catalog instead. It's turning out pretty well so far.

I am here because I am at work and at the moment work is quite boring... so I often need small breaks in between to not fall asleep.
In short prospect: I'm here for Z

This is literally the last place on the internet where I share my ideas and opinions with anyone else outside of email. I gave up on social networking long ago. I have had some knock down drag out wars with folks from everything from comic books to national fiscal policy. I've lost some fights, I won some fights. But now I'm getting old and after battling trolls, goblins, know-it-alls, and narcissistic madmen for years, I have realized that I have turned into a virtual equivalent of Larry Holmes in his fight with Mike Tyson. There just comes a point when a guy knows he's too old to keep up the fight any more. His punches are sloppy, he gets tired easy, and his win-loss record isn't going to get any better. There was a time when I could recite lines from papers released by the Brookings Institute in 1973. Now I'm lucky if I can remember whether I grabbed the cell phone before leaving for work. So rather than be that creepy old dude who keeps going to the night clubs every weekend long after his hay-day, I'd rather just retire to my 'Florida' website and fade away quietly than make a big fuss like Shiela La Bewf.

GOG has some great titles, a really good perspective on DRM, and their fan base is (for the most part) a dedicated group of smart people who knows what video games should be all about. So if I'm going to pick a last place to spend my internet retirement years, this seems a good a place as any.

Or I could just put a digital gun in mouth and go post all the time on some 'look at me!' website like facebook or twitter... or god forbid, Reddit. No thanks.
I'm here because when i moved to this town i had no internet connection, so i learned to love having drm-free games. Now i have internet at home (well.. my neighbor connection.. ) but i love having a backup of my games just in case...

Besides, with the years one learn to appreciate a good gamer community and gog has one of the best. Lots of humor and fun :P
