I'm tempted to write a long rebuttal to this... but if you think really Windows 7 is superior to Linux in every way, it probably wouldn't sway you very much. ;-)

I recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 and love it so far. I didn't think they could top XP's stability, but it is faster and seems to be more stable. Everything seems to be improved in a big way, from the included apps (calculator, notepad, paint, clock, etc.) to the automatic updating system and the beautiful user interface.

I was a Linux buff up until about a month ago. I know how many will make a rebuttal against me because of it. But I don't care, Linux can't run Windows games which makes Windows the superior gaming PC. Period.
I can go on about how much I tried with Linux though, Cedega and Wine just don't work most of the time and when they do it's either slow or glitchy to the point of not working. Ubuntu is nice, just can't play games. Also my Linksys router won't work, specifically some of my adapters for my network won't work. Simply won't, wasted weeks trying.
I retract my statement said earlier though, Linux wins in two ways not one. It is generally faster desktop AND it's free. It just refuses to work with random pieces of hardware and can't run games.............

Linux isn't a really viable gaming platform yet (and hasn't been widely advertised as one, afaik.) and, as with OS X, you have to be a bit careful about what hardware you buy. It's always been this way, although Ubuntu's hardware compatibility is nothing short of amazing considering the situation a few years ago.
Wine is great, you just have to check the compatibility level for the software you want to run to make sure it's actually fully supported; you can't just throw any random game on it and expect everything to be roses and daisies (although a lot of 2D stuff generally is). The AppDB is an excellent resource here. Slowness with Wine is, in my experience, usually an issue with your video card drivers.
Your Linksys router has nothing to do with your wifi card drivers. I'm perplexed as to why you mentioned it at all, unless you tried to replace the firmware on it with OpenWrt or something.

Lol you caught that and I knew I should've edited it out. I'm tired right now and tried saying it was the adapters but typed router because it was in my head. My point in my post was that I don't have to worry with Windows, I plug it in it works, no fuss no muss. Only thing I had to worry about was my theme and what order to install my games. No one can argue that in any way, Windows is easier and though I'm technically capable I just don't want to waste my time on doing something when it happens automatically on Win7.
By the way I noted that Under Cedega 6.0 and better UFO: Aftershock ran better on Ubuntu Linux than on Windows XP, loaded 10x faster and didn't have a memory leak that built up after a few missions. I put it on their site for reporting gaming performance for games but they didn't do much for the page, apparently I'm one of the few who love Aftershock. This is the only game I can think of that ran fine for me without serious tweaking, just wanted to toss that out.

How do you get rid of the Show Desktop button? I'm a big time Win + D user.
Easy solution. Give up games. ;)
I wish I could take that advice too, or I wouldn't even have Windows. But I still hugely prefer using Linux most of the time.
I just like the whole philosophy. I can do whatever I want, and not what Microsoft wants me to do. Like in my above post, I can't figure out how to get rid of that ugly Show Desktop button. And don't get me started on how painful it was to get rid of a 100mb partition that Windows thought it needed on my drive.

I'm not fueling any fires now, but will explain my history. I was a Windows guy simply because it was there, then went to Linux for a few years where I only touched Windoze for games, everything else Linux. Now I am re-converted back to Win7 because I have less time in my life, so when I do get on my PC I want it to work and don't wanna reboot to play games after I'm done typing stuff. I am basically a re-converted convert and not a traitor as I have never completely given up Linux nor Windows. I'm just in the middle and torn between Ubuntu and Win7 right now and Win7 wins due to laziness.

I actually just installed Windows 7 yesterday on my XP computer, no real reason except I got it for $30 for being a student so I figured why not...
I've used it before so no real surprises, it did take me a few hours to get the sound working again, had to find the mobo drivers online, windows 7 ran the motherboard but not the sound on install (old A8N5X asus). Performance wise not seeing really any difference between XP and 7, but wasn't expecting it to be visibly noticeable anyway.
I did run into some issues because apparently my BIOS was too old to install 7, so I had to find a newer one and flash it before installing... its working fine though, so I guess it wasn't too big of an issue. Definitely have to upgrade my RAM/processor/mobo in the next few months when I scrounge up about $300, going for low end system, which will still blow my current one out of the water

yeah, it's definitely having issues with my Soundblaster Live! 24-bit soundcard (which is a dead product according to Creative >.< ). The drivers it loads automatically are causing major lock-up issues that just never happened in XP. I *think* I've forced it to use the old drivers off the install CD (after 5 tries to get that working).
My Graphics card is another "end-of-life" card, but that seems to be doing just fine.
The machine, when I built it, in 2004/5 wasn't high end, but it was more powerful than similar priced high-street versions (yay for microdirect and their CHEAP components ^_^ ), hell, it scores 3.6 out of 7.9 on the performance tests, and it's only got 1GB RAM.

WARNING!! Do NOT tell W7 to re-index your hard drives. Windows Explorer will basically be unusable until it finishes, and with all the crap on my drives, that took just over 2 days!!! >.<

hmm, issues with old hardware. I think WinXP is now like Win98 SE was a few years ago, a way to use old hardware and nothing else. I'm holding onto my old copy of XP, it's still selling for mucho moolah on Newegg and Tigerdirect for no reason and needs to drop in price.
