And it turns out to be as unwanted as it always has been, unless you happen to be ICANN... who will cash in.

Personally, I've always thought porn should get a .adu top level domain (obviously, for adult) to make voluntary filtering easier... but I have no opposition to porn (or anything else) and in the end, don't really care that much.

Still, interesting new turn-around after a decade of refusing to create a TLD for porn.
I can't wait for the satirical webpages that will come of this. iPad.xxx comes to mind.
And right at this moment every business, school and public library in the world is mass-blocking the .xxx extension to keep "the porn" off their precious computers. Yeah, that'll work.

That was one of the arguments for .xxx no? It put all the smut in one easy to filter place. Problem is what you define as porn. Playboy will probably not move to .xxx and neither will Hustler or the others.

No currently available porn site in its right mind will move to the .xxx TLD for just that reason. Why go to a place that automatically limits your potential exposure?

That would imply porn sites deliberately try to get people who don't want to see it too look at it. At the least .xxx would make it easy for those who want the stuff to find it by looking for .xxx sites

Are you implying that porn sites don't try to market themselves to everyone with a computer and an internet connection? What internet have you been browsing?

They do, but they still have to abide by you know, laws and stuff. You can't just sell porn to underage kids.
If pornographic material for sale or display on the Internet is not limited to the XXX domain (in other words, if pornographic web sites are allowed to exist outside the XXX domain), then this does not significantly aid in filtering content.

If we support the policy of censoring commercial adult businesses and free-view pornographic services on non-XXX domains, then we must also consider how to address amateur (non-commercial) adult content. (freedom of expression vs. censorship)

We must also consider who decides what is and is not pornographic. (art vs. porn)

For me:
censorship = bad
&
personal responsibility = good

But I'll admit that it's a sticky issue. (pun intended)

But the use of the .xxx domain is completely voluntary. There are no laws or even simple rules that would force porn sites to use it, so it is both completely pointless to have it and even more pointless to block it.
I remember when I first came onto the net back in the early nineties, 80% of it was porn and spyware that would force porn on you if you attempted to go anywhere else.

Why now simply ".adult"?

Although, .adu would be easy to mix up with .edu, making for interesting situations when a teacher is about to show educational material in the classroom. In that regard, I'm in favour of the shorter form.
I'm of the opinion that this is a stupid move, and agree wholeheartedly with this blog post.

Ha! I have been saying .adu (because it's 3 letters, and I think all TLDs should be, for aesthetic reasons) :-), for years... and I never once noticed the .edu similarity.

Well, at least now I know why my idea wasn't all that good :-)

I take it you don't like .museum, .aero, .info, or any or the two-letter country TLDs?
