So, while I was replaying the ever-so-good realMyst, a flashback into my not-so-distant adolescent years occurred.
I remember playing an FMV first-person-adventure game, very similar to Myst. It came on several discs, I'm sure. I'm also pretty sure it was released about the same time as Phantasmagoria, or at least after Phantasmagoria, because I played it at a friend's house along with the mentioned gore-fest. Probably Sierra's doing.
I remember it had time-travel. Or teleportation to different areas. Or something.
I clearly remember an older guy in a white (kinda Roman) robe rowing in a boat. You were at a lighthouse or something, and you could see him through a telescope. To get to the lighthouse you needed to pass through a village on a river or something like that... I do know it was really brown, lots of pottery and tapestry, kind of arabic...
And that's all I can remember. Anyone got any ideas?

I don't remember if it has the white guy in the robes as I haven't played this game in many years but lost in time has you traveling through time solving puzzles.

No, no, this game is much too old.
The game I remember had real life actors, FMV (lots of'em), and still shots of prerendered backgrounds in the same manner as Myst.
Maybe take a look in this thread at the JA forums. If it's there, perhaps you'll spot the name that rings a bell.

Sort of along the lines of Realms of the Haunting then? Only not.
The Journeyman Project?

Gremmi: The Journeyman Project?

There's no FMV in The Journeyman Project IIRC.

The first one had a smattering of it scattered about. The second one (which is most likely the one he means from the description) had quite a bit.

This seems to be it - the Atlantis shown here is exactly what I remember.
Thanks dude, you get a cookie! :D

The third had plenty of FMV and also involved time travel.
But what you describe sounds a lot like Return to Zork which was much older than Phantasmagoria:

It has a lighthouse, you then take a rowboat and arrive at a village. It may be one of the sequels as well: Zork Nemesis or Zork Grand Inquisitor
There's so many games that have elements from what you mention though :S
EDIT: crap it seems you already found it :P

Yeah, but thanks for caring. <3
Also, I always thought Zork was a really old text adventure. :/

The oldest Zorks were.
Grand Inquisitor is quite an underrated game too! I wish GOG would sell the last three games.
@Namur Thanks for the link to that thread BTW. Lots of neat stuff there!
I love it how GOG's community makes me rediscover 'new' old bundles of virtual joy. You're really neat, guys.
I'll be sure to check out Zork sometime too, then. :)
