It's been a while, but we've finally found the time to post the full interview with Tony Zurovec, the master mind behind the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/crusader_no_remorse/]Crusader games. There were some very good questions from the community, and we've added a couple from our team, but the answers from Tony are just outstanding! We really encourage you to check the full Q&A session, even if you didn't like Crusader games (why wouldn't you?), as it gives a great insight at how the games industry looked like in the 90's and how games were made back in the days when Origin made some of the best titles ever.

Once again we'd like to thank Tony for his time and answering all those questions, and Vagabond for making this Q&A possible. Enjoy your read!

J_C_Denton: And me. We'll show No Remorse... :)

Whodares: No Regret either ;)
Of course. :)
Some really well thought out and insightful answers here. That was a great read. He comes across as a really nice guy too.

Stormwalker: I could go on at length, but the bottom line is: When people compile a list of greatest games of all time, DOOM is always on that list. Crusader never is.
Only on GOG could someone go all angry fanboy over an 18 year old game.
Asked what he thinks about current gaming industry and throwing dirt on WoW? How original...

18 year old game? I bet there are people here that would go all angry fanboy over the Colossal Cave.

Which only reinforces the point. You won't find things like that elsewhere.

Inquisitor54: Funnily enough, I bought this last week on GOG and can't stop playing it. I first played it on the playstation years ago and it has been lodged in my mind ever since. Will No Regret come to GOG?
I own "No Regret" on CD... somewhere, dang it, but I can't find the silly thing. I'd happily re-purchase it through GoG.

What Inquisitor54 asked: Will "No Regret" join "No Remorse" here on GoG?

In 1995, it was estimated that DOOM was installed on more PCs than even Windows 95 operating system. DOOM is widely regarded as one of the most important titles in gaming history. It was voted the #1 game of all time in a poll among over 100 game developers and journalists conducted by GameSpy in July 2001, and PC Gamer proclaimed Doom the most influential game of all time in its ten-year anniversary issue in April 2004. GameTrailers ranked Doom as #1 "Breakthrough PC Game". In 2009, Game Informer put Doom 6th on their list of "The Top 200 Games of All Time", saying that it "[gave] the genre the kick start it needed to rule the gaming landscape two decades later". DOOM coined the term "deathmatch". It is possibly the main reason that FPS gaming industry is what it is today. There's more than that, but you get the idea.

But none of that matters to a bunch of whiny forum faggots who are gonna get butthurt when someone tells them the truth: Crusader has no legacy. It influenced nothing. And the simple fact, ladies and gents, is that Mr. Tony felt he had to insult the giant that is DOOM to make himself feel better about releasing his own second-rate snoozefest of a game. So I'm gonna insult him right back, and if you don't like it, tough.
Apparently this is what happens if you play Doom every day for 18 years straight.
So far the only one butthurt here is you, Stormwalker. Real shame this community has such a rude person. I like both DOOM and Crusader, and both are great games, that's it.

On the subject - great interview. A lot of interesting things about Origin there. A lot of valid points too, especially the key card example. I remember blasting a locked door with rocket launcher when I got tired of looking for keycard to open it. Sets of alarm though.

They've reached their wit's end.

Stormwalker: ...
LOL

It's like a console kiddie. Only not.
Stormwalker:
"terrible maze game" and "incredibly annoying" are in no way insulting words; they are just an opinion, and quite a balanced one for that matter, as Tony also mentions Doom's positive sides. "fuck you" and "whiny faggots who are gonna get butthurt" are offensive.

I am sorry that you identify with a computer game so deeply to genuinely feel offended by someone's negative opinion of it. What is more scary is that - once your neurotic over-sensitivity has been 'insulted' - you find it just and righteous to 'insult someone back'.

Wouldn't it be more fulfilling to invest all this emotional devotion to your own development? We already have misguided, frustrated football hooligans stabbing each other because their sacred object has been ‘offended’; do we really need the same with computer games?

So wait, let me get this straight, you're equating me insulting someone in a forum(which if you don't like you're free to not read BTW) with a sports fanatic stabbing another human being in real life??? Riiiiiiiiiight. And I'm apparently the psychotic one here. Poor baby, did you get offended by my bad words? They are just words, meaningless unless you give them meaning. Yet you'd equate that with attempted murder? You're a piece of shit, bro.

Just do as everyone else on this forum has done and ignore me if you don't agree. I don't apologize for being offensive, it's not a crime.

jefequeso: Jefequeso: Yeah. I'm a big Doom/Quake fanatic, but there's no denying that the game involved a ton of backtracking and keycard searching. And I've played through most of the levels several times.
So you've played through "MOST of the levels SEVERAL TIMES"...yet your a DOOM/Quake fanatic. Doubt it. Sounds pretty casual to me. How about you tell me a specific level from the commercial release where backtracking is a problem?

Oh, aren't you precious. The person who comes in and posts long, rambling and incredibly whiny screeds about how hurt you are over a perceived insult to a game you like... call the rest of the people here whiny and butthurt? And "faggot" as an insult, really? As if I didn't have enough trouble taking you seriously already :)

You ramble about things that are at most tangential to the point, while the others here have said things that are mostly to the point, so I really don't think you have a leg to stand on in your criticism of the "whiny forum faggots" here.

That Doom is a good game hasn't been questioned. That Doom has been, and still is, incredibly popular, hasn't been questioned. It's just you who see those things and respond to things that have never been said. What has been said is that Doom has some design decisions that Zurovec didn't want in his game. He wanted to go in a different direction when it comes to some things, out of a personal preference for how his game should be. How hard is this to understand?

Your statistics over how many copies Doom sold and what rewards it got is completely, utterly unrelated to the discussion at hand. Did you seriously think anyone here is unaware of how well it sold? :)
