I've had repeated issues with running Neverwinter Nights in multiplayer on my laptop. It's nothing fancy, but single player works without a hitch, and my internet runs really well. However, when I try to use multiplayer, it stutters to the point of being unplayable i.e. resembling 2 FPS. Additionally, the menus become unresponsive, requiring me to wait 3 seconds before it registers that I actually selected something. I've tried running it in Compatibility Mode, I made sure that the audio settings are 2D and that shiny water is disabled, but to no avail. The menu thing also happens after playing single player sometimes, but going back into single player still works just fine, so I can live with that. It's just incredibly difficult to engage with other people when you seem to be 2 minutes behind everyone else in-game.

TL;DR - Stuttering (?) problems that seem to be connected to multiplayer mode; please help!

I tried to help RippleGylf out. I had her try connecting on my LAN (so not even over the internet) and the problem persisted. Bandwidth should have been huge, so can't be a bandwidth issue. Yet the problem doesn't happen in single player. So I'm confused. I googled around and it sounds very similar to other problems reported with NWN bought through GOG.com on newer computers, except for some reason only happens when trying to run multiplayer.

I have a similar error when I run NWN which I purchased through GOG.

A couple questions:

1. Do you have the NWNCX extension installed? I do. I think I may have found a reproducible problem with the NWNCX extension (See my topic in this forum. I am not allowed to post links).
2. Do you get the same lag playing in single player? I do.
3. What video card do you have?

I've been playing NWN on this laptop for a couple years using a version that I purchased through Steam. I decided to replace it with a new version that I purchased through GOG. My laptop had no trouble playing with all NWN video options cranked up to maximum. I might re-install Steam and skip GOG entirely.
One suggestion is to change CPU affinity.

In nwnplayer.ini, change this line to -2 instead of it's default, 0.

Client CPU Affinity=0
