So, after playing The Witcher 2 for around 10 hours, last night the combat finally "clicked" for me. I was getting my ass handed to me by Endregas and Nekkers, but all of a sudden I started to be the one doing the hurting. Closing in with light attacks, chaining into strong ones, dodging only when needed, proper positioning as to not get flanked... It was awesome.

Has anyone else had that moment where everything just comes together properly?
My "click" moment came when I realized how bad the game is at auto selecting targets and my decision to start utilizing the alt button to lock onto targets of my choice. Combat became about a 100 x easier after that.

Also, constant use of Quen. ;p
Sorta....I still get crushed every once in a while, but nothing like it was when I first started.

It's true, once you get the tactics down and start figuring out the combat..its sweeet (for you, not the monsters :D)

You know, I read the manual, I honestly did not see the 'alt' key mention anywhere in it. I wouldn't have even known about it unless I read about it on the forums... either irritating or I'm just a bad reader.

But, for me, once I figured out the shield spell and the trap spell, the game became way more fun. It allowed me some time to figure out the mechanics and dance away from the opponents, close in with a long-distance light attack and proceed according to the situatino.

I've had no probles at all with the autotargeting, it generally seems to be the monster in the middle of the screen = target. Occasionally I might do a flip and stab a monster to the side, but I don't see it as much of a problem.

But, that's the problem. You're right it's almost always the damn middle target, which means you get pincered more often than not. Was driving me batty. :p
I've got it petty much dominated I think, I still got my ass handed over to me by 15 nekkers in a cave though.
Ignis Level 3 burns all fighting problems away
I found that constantly changing your target helps when fighting a group. Hit one guy, and then when he's recovering, hit a different target. Always hit the guy that looks like he's getting ready to hit you, then move onto the next one. Think of it as a little dance of death. Took me a while to get a hang of it, but now I'm killing those damn Nekker's like Drowners from TW1
That ability that lets me hit adjacent enemies with each sword swing makes me a hurricane of pain. I've planned my entire build out knowing what the max Talent points are, so I'm going to have a fairly adept all-rounder Geralt.

Next playthrough I'm planning on Finishing The Witcher 1 and importing the save. I'm looking forward to playing through the Prologue again and actually kicking ass since I'll know the mechanics.
