So in the English language version of the game we have fairly consistent matching of accent to character race / nationality...at least to my ear
- Aedirnian accent sounds Welsh
- Kaedweni accent sounds Irish
- Dwarves have a Scottish accent
- Temrian accent sounds English
- Witchers sound North American (at least Geralt and Letho do...can't remember the other pair).

Does this sort of thing apply to other language versions?

Saskia has a very prominent accent, but I have no idea which it is. Sometimes it sounds Welsh to me, sometimes like Eastern-European, and sometimes it even reminds me of Scandinavian.

Henselt sounded scottish to me, has a real brogue going on.

The German version doesn't have it. And that's good - as dwarves talking bavarian would, while being hilarious at first, kill all of the immersion. :P

I think, English is happy to have such a rich multitude of different accents which are fitting for that kind of stuff. While German has quite many different dialects, most of them would just sound plain ridiculous when applied to a serious, dark, medieval game... or just any game, that's supposed to convey any seriousness. ;)

Why? That would be on its own level of awesome! But that's how precisely people used to talk in middle ages - in their own dialects, sometimes barely inteliglible with the one from neighbouring village. Aren't modern languages artificial creations developed between 16th and 19th centuries?

Ruhrpott German would be awesome for the dwarves! Maybe the Bavarians could have Henselt. Plattdeutsch for Kovir?

Nah. Modern languages aren't artificial in a hardcore sense, but they are affected by changes in communication, so standards and expectations have changed since the early modern period.

This is why I don't play the English version. I hate forced British accents. The Polish VA doesn't have this and I'm glad for it, it's much more immersive.

'Artificial' in a sense that they aren't naturally developed from any vernacular. They are a mixture, sometimes only based on one prestigious dialect or sociolect with added features from vast array of spoken varieties.

Well, I checked the voice cast and most of the voice actors are British, Scottish and so on. So the accents are natural and not forced.

I'm a bit English, a bit Irish and even a tiny bit Scottish. I live about 35 miles from Wales.

To my ear the British accents in this game are good. There are no real shockers that I can put my finger on. Nothing that registered enough to make me really cringe.

That's a lot more than can be said for some films.

I've just checked the credits to see who plays King Henselt...he comes through the door at about 6:07 on this TV clip from about 25 years ago...nice cardigan!
