To the point: the audio is great, music is great, but during every dialog scene, the voices crack and skip. My first thought was, it's a performance issue, but since the game runs fine and background sounds still play fine during dialogs and cut scenes — and are way too effing loud, by the way; they really need to be quieted so we can hear what's being said — it's clearly an issue with dialog voices, and if these voice files use a different format (e.g., ogg or mp3, as opposed to wav), then it's most likely a codec issue. Short of removing and replacing my audio codecs, does someone have a suggestion? Hardware/driver specs below.

The Witcher 2 + patch 1.1 (GOG.com release, no extra DLC)
Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)
Gigabyte ED45-UD3P
Onboard audio: Realtek HD ALC889A
Driver: Realtek HD Audio v6.0.1.5998 (signed by Microsoft)
Stereo speakers (no Dolby, 5.1, 8 channel, none of that crap)
K-Lite Codec Pack 7.1.0 + 64-bit 4.6.0
For specific codec versions, feel free to read K-Lite pack details online, because I don't have this information on me.

What I've tried: opened Sounds panel, turned off all enhancements; disabled Immedate Mode (automatically disabled when you turn off enhancements anyway); disabled automatic volume leveling for voice communications. Reduced default format from 24-bit 48KHz stereo (DVD) to 16-bit 48KHz stereo (CD).

What I haven't tried: reducing or disabling audio hardware acceleration. Reason: I can't; this option isn't available in Sounds or any other control panel, including 'dxdiag', nor is it under 'compatibility settings'. Normally this would be the *first* thing I'd try, but it's simply not an option. Besides, this is not something I want or should have to do for any modern application.

Please note that the game itself runs great, and all audio *but* voice is fine. I would gladly install any codecs that came with TW2, if there were a codec package, but there isn't.

Have you had any luck in solving this? I've got the same problem. It seems to resolve if I drop the resolution down -- perhaps I'm short in system resources? It's odd that it's only the dialogue having problems.
I'm using the same audio chip as you ALC889 Seems there was an issue about the crackling on one of the patches. (no Dolby, 5.1, 8 channel, none of that crap) -Don't know what you mean by all that crap?? I have 5.1 speakers and its certainly adds to the overall gameplay!!

No crackling here but your right the mixing of the audio is awful, like a student high school project.. varying volumes super loud edits of dialogue etc. Most games have adjustments for ambient sounds Not this one!! Can't hear Geralt many times in the Prologue because of the battle going on(alt language packs don't have this problem)
You can hear people outside buildings louder thru walls then when near them and the clipping issues like tree branches inside buildings?

AN issue about nvidia and vsync in this link: http://snes9x.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4844&sid=42f4d6ff47603b32b97d23f0eb9a04a3 (Don't know if that will help, I use vsync and GTX570 but not prob here)

got word from the official support about this issue (dissappearing voice bug). Try lowering the texture memory size and/or the decals may help.

PS just read your post again. And it seems it's a different issue. But maybe this solution solves it for you anyway. :)

Yeah, the problem is that the voices are crackling and slowing. All the other audio appears to be unaffected, but I could be missing it if the music is slowing down.

This happens while the game runs without any other slowdown.
I wonder if this hardware specific? I have a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music and have no sound issues. Has there been a recent Realtek driver update?
