the OS purely depends on what you want to use it for. gamers should use windows. no one way about it it has the largest gaming support and library of working games. all around it works great and does what it needs to do.

Linux works best as a server, it can do many other things and even act as a desktop but it excels in the server field. it does what it needs to do with little hassle but expecting game support for it is a little much. sure allowing the game servers to run on it is fine, but theres no reason for a gamer to switch to it beyond running servers for it. if you like linux and you like games, then you best keep a windows partition to boot into.

My data says not Irrelevant. Just not main stream yet. Google seems beinterested in changing that. as is Apple. The indie developers scene has more power than many believe. After all, Sierra had humble beginnings. So did EA. (back when they actually did cool stuff themselves) I worked at a few garage startups and have seen the potential, even a couple now worth over 100 mil.You may want to check out Hothead Games. they used to make top commercial games for LInux before they were bought by EA. EA is poison for so many amazing developer groups. Once EA gets in the picture, Linux development gets killed. Oh, FrozenByte, makes Linux games. I got a whole database of Linux Commercial Game developers if you are interested.
Personally I thought that title belonged to PS3, and XBox and to a lessor extent Nitendo Wii; DS I think is actually more popular but I could be worng). I predict the next real big gaming platform will be the Android Smartphone. Heck now we have playstation "ceritified" Android Smartphones now so I think the day is sooner than we believe (it almost always is)

Actually, if I read reports correctly its becoming increasingly clear that the combat system was designed for console controllers. Most PCs don't have those. that would indicate that the long term goal was to product this game for the Xbox at least (whch would explain the DirectX use rather than something more flexible like OpenGL).

My conspiricy theory gut feeling is this: Witcher 1 was known as a PC game, they decided that using a eager PC community would ensure more early sales than starting with a platform where the Witcher was virtually unknown, yet they designed the combat system to enable them to easily port to that new market. Now they have people BEGGING for an Xbox "port". So the audience is now ripe. Furthermore, its easier for the public to trace bugs on PC's than it is on a Console system which is a "black box" so you can't really trace any of the numerous we in the community have found in week 1 and 2. So this made for a well planned way of getting cheaper, more reliable testing/tracing than they could have ever done had it gone to a console first. We PC gamers are also much for tolerent for bugs than console gamers. Heck we often find work arounds. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next 6 months we read about an Xbox version, which wouldn't be a huge jump given they made it for MS Windows. PS3, that may be another story. Personally I whink the Wii controller would be awesome, but its graphics hardware isnot up to the challenge (lite graphics mode?)

I would think they used DirectX because OpenGL seems to be pretty irrelevant these days. The last game I can think of that used OpenGL was in 2006. Even ID Software is going way from OpenGL.

Also, as far as I can tell, using Game Pad in PC games seem to have increased significantly in the last 5 years or more, probably because of console ports but I think that created a whole new market where people like to play with gamepads. I don't own a console at all, but I do like playing games with my gamepad. So I wouldn't say they created the combat with the intention of going to the console, but rather they created the combat for gamepad compatibility because there is a sizable market for it in PC gaming.

I run the game in WINE. It is slow, but playable. Sadly, I can't seem to run the GOG.com patcher, which fails with the error "Cannot open the launcher process." Has anyone gotten this to work? I fear there are some inter-process permissions issues at the root of this that have nothing to do with WINE. Patching should not require any serious amounts of extra sophistication; it's only a matter of replacing old files with new ones. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any standalone patch links.

Weirdly I got this to work by double clicking the EXE rather than trying to run it via the console (it failed when I tried). No idea why this worked.

My original question was from last year: if the developers could look if it runs on wine, or actually try it. It might solve some bugs on the way.
But I intentionally created the topic to say if it is able to run on wine, for those that are not willing to shell out $46 to just try it.
So please stick with the topic: wine support, does it run on wine, yes or no, and if so, what do you need to do to get it running

Since the game came out, it seems it runs on at least an nvidia based platform. I haven't got it to run at all. It seems to bail out very early... before showing any windows, not even a splash screen :-(.
(I have a crossfire HD4890 setup, which has now been de-crossfired due to summer. Too hot to have 2 cards next to eachother :-( ).
