I’ve been holding off downloading the Witcher III because I hadn’t even finished the previous two games when it released. But I started downloading the files today in advance of the 1.07 patch.

However, when downloading the 1.02 patch, I found that its default filename is "witcher3_patch_1.01.exe".

What gives?

Also, I just noticed that the main game files (I haven’t downloaded them yet) are all labeled 1.06. Do I even need the patches, then? Or are the main game files actually still 1.0?

For reasons, I don’t want to use Galaxy.

The currently hosted game installation files put your game at version 1.06, so you don't need all of the patches. You *do* need the enabler patch, that is the 1.02 patch. Don't worry about the difference in website and file name (it's a GOG thing). Install your game, then 1.02 to enable it.
So install all main files to install 1.06, then install the day zero patch to enable?

I would never have gone that route based on the 1.06 version numbering of the main files—thanks for the help.

Though I guess now I’ll just wait for the 1.07 main files since they are updating the main installation files.

The day one patch is named 1.01/1.02 in the update process - I guess CDP:R could not decide which one to take, so they named it like that. It should be installed before applying the later patch (which upgrades any version after the day one patch to version 1.06).

If the game is 1.06 then you should need the 1.02 patch since that was the pre-release DRM and it was stated it wouldn't be needed on installers created after the release date.

You mean 'shouldn't'? If that's the case, and I'm not saying it isn't, it's odd that GOG keeps the 1.02 patch available when their installer is 1.06.

Yes, I meant shouldn't.. :/
They keep it available for people reinstalling from their pre-release discs. I imagine this will be a rare case where that patch will be available as long as GoG is alive.
Okay, good, so I don’t need the day-zero patch to enable the main files, which are being updated to current with every patch?

That is more intuitive.
Oh, that's new, because when I last checked upon the files like two weeks ago, the main files where still listed as "pre release (1.0). Which means: you're right.
I think they keep that enabler in place for people that bought the DVD version of the game. After installing that patch is needed to play the game.
New installer is 1.06. You do not need any earlier patches.
