Wing Commander: The Kilrahi Saga

Wing Commander: The Kilrahi Saga (1996)

Genres:Simulator
Themes:Action
Story:The Kilrathi Saga was a grand compilation of the initial Wing Commander trilogy and its four expansion packs. Dropaway cockpits, remastered audio and improved joystick options were among the list of improvements. The biggest selling point was native speed-limited support for Windows. Initial sales were low because many fans still readily had computers running DOS to play older Wing Commander games. The game received a second printing in 1998, but many fans were still hesitant to rebuy games they already owned. By the turn of the century however, a huge shift from DOS to Windows had occurred and everyone was scrambling to get a copy. Although the July 2000 edition of PC Gamer included the Kilrathi Saga version of Wing Commander I on its cover disc, auction prices on eBay soared to well over $300 for the full set. Wing Commander fans struggled to find copies until 2005 and the improvement DOS emulation. Although Kilrathi Saga has exciting extras, minor glitches and the solid performance of the original Wing Commander games in DOSBox has relieved the intense price pressure on the game. This is how I first played the original games, I'd played WC4, then went back to 3, Privateer 2, Prophecy - eventually with nothing new coming out I tracked this down on ebay. Features like flightstick support and alternate music (to me this is how it was supposed to sound). Also a lot of fan patches only work with the KS.
I played "Wing Commander 3" and "Super Wing Commander", aka the Macintosh ports as a kid and I loved them. Still love them. Years later, on Windows, my desire to replay these classics once more resulted in a purchase of the the original WC1, 2 and 3 for DOS, emulated via DosBox obviously. And it was an absolute shock! Where was the orchestral music? What kind of sounds were produced by this software? Gosh, the horror, I had no idea how "good" I had it with my Mac versions. Only after learning that the Macintosh ports were based on something called the Kilrathi Saga, enhanced versions of these games for Windows 95, I managed to muster the courage to attempt replaying WC3 again... and finally, that Kilrathi Saga variant did play as I remembered it. These are the definitive releases, even though some bugs exist. Packing these versions with our purchases on GoG, ideally with some of the bugfixes created by the community, should be a no-brainer!

Wing Commander 1 and Money Island are the games that made me empty my saved pocket & birthday money and buy a Sound Blaster. The graphics and sound was jaw dropping in its time and felt like playing the future in a way that I don't think I experienced again until playing DOOM for the first time. Wing Commander (including Privateer) was one of my favourite series of all time and definitely one of the first where I really cared what happened to Blair and the other characters. Each installment improved the gameplay, but WC1 has that "Das Boot in space" feeling that Chris Roberts went for.
