Xenogears

Xenogears (1998)

by Square Product Development Division 3, Square, Square Electronic Arts
Genres:Role-playing (RPG)
Themes:Fantasy, Science fiction
Game modes:Single player
Story:Xenogears follows protagonist Fei Fong Wong and several others as they journey to uncover the truth behind mysterious, cabalistic entities operating in their world. The principles and philosophies of Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung influence the plot, character design, and world of Xenogears. Additionally, the symbols, theological concepts, and devotional practices of several world religions are represented in fictionalized forms in the game. Major psychological themes are the nature of identity and human memory, particularly as these relate to the phenomenon of dissociative identity disorder. The relationship between humanity and machines is central to the game's plot, as indicated by the presence of giant robots dubbed "gears," which almost each playable character can control.Show more

I played this game so many times as a kid and many more as an adult. One thing I can say is the story is on another level to any other game released EVER! The characters are well fleshed out and you truely do care what becomes of them (even the fringe characters). There is so much about this game/story that is relevant to today. It's just a shame that games like this don't get made anymore because the games industry is shareholders first, last and gamers only matter when were not buying a product. Sorry for the semi-rant, amazing game. Needed a remaster over a decade ago and would love to see a full remake and have the team finish disc 2 :).
Such a special game that deserves to exist outside of the PS1. It stands on the shoulders of the giants that are Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger, and proves that it deserves to be counted among them. The battle system is one of the most unique and fun that I've ever seen in an RPG, and the story is enthralling. Please bring this to modern systems!!

Incredible game, would love to have this preserved for future generations. It may never get a remaster, but at least having it accessible for gamers everywhere would be fantastic.

A RPG on par with FF7. This often forgotten jewel needs to be preserved before its lost forever. The story is one of my personal favorite video game stories ever told. The combat is unique and super fun.

Unfortunately it is not so famous as it should be - but it's as great as final fantasy vii, viii or tactics, breath of fire iii and so on. I loved it, hopefully gog-community too.

This masterpiece, Xenogears, will always be on top in terms of narrative quality and any game after it only pales in comparison. The only way I can see it be surpassed is for a remake, or at least a port, to be released! And a PC port on GOG will be way better than nothing! A dream come true for veterans and a gateway of entry for novices that have yet to experience the Best Game of All Time!! 😁👍
Best game ever made with the best soundtrack in a game and the best story I've ever seen in a game. Too bad both Square and Monolith refuse to acknowledge this game.
Somehow I feel like even new-gen players know about this game but haven't had the opportunity to play it, which is a very sad thing. I remember playing this as a kid, and not knowing what the hell I was playing besides noticing how fun the combat and characters were. I was too young to know the depths of this incredible game, which sadly had a rushed ending. Probably my most-requested game to get a remaster or remake, which is funny it hasn't despite smaller/less known games getting the treatment. I'll admit I don't remember much and I should return to it again, but I will hold out for something new if possible.
Those games also need your vote!
Monster Hunter
Monster HunterMonster Hunter is an online action-hunting game by CAPCOM for the PlayStation 2 released on March 11th, 2004 in Japan, and September 21st, 2004 in North America. The game is a fantasy hunting simulator filled with many deadly monsters. Like actual hunting, successfully killing or capturing the monsters requires significant strategy, skill and involved resource management. While initially considered a commercial failure, Monster Hunter would go on to become one of CAPCOM's highest selling franchises. Despite featuring an offline mode, Monster Hunter was primarily an online game. The official servers were shut down on December 31, 2007 in North America and Europe, and July 1, 2011 in Japan. This means that it is now impossible to play online on official CAPCOM servers. Despite this, the game still features a small active community on private servers.

Monster Hunter 2
Monster Hunter 2Monster Hunter 2 has an improved weapon tree and upgradeable armors. As in all Monster Hunter games, armor pieces can be worn to obtain skills and abilities. A new feature in Monster Hunter 2 is the use of gems. Gems add skill points to complement those added by armor and weapons. Gems are created by combining ore and/or monster parts. Gems can be attached and detached from armor and weapons that have special gem slots. Along with the various species of monster returning from the first Monster Hunter, Monster Hunter 2 contains many new monsters, such as the metallic wind dragon Kushala Daora, the lion-headed dragon Teo Teskatoru (named Teostra in the North American and PAL versions of Monster Hunter Freedom 2) and his female counterpart Nana Teskatory (named Lunastra in the North American and PAL versions of MHF2), the primates Babakonga and Dodobrango (Congalala and Blangonga in MHF2), the bull or minotaur-like monster Rajang, and the chameleon-like dragon Oonazuchi (Chameleos in MHF2). With new monsters also comes the prospect of new weapons and armor.
