Q. I heard about X quest in a FAQ but after speaking to some of the people involved, I still didn't get the quest.

Certain quests are not available until you reach a specific point in the game - like the Water Thief quest in Vault 13 - or another, related quest has been completed. Others may require certain pre-requisites in terms of your stat or skill levels, which your current character might not fufill.
(note: This is from my memory - but should be correct)

this is also true.
small update to include win98 compatibility info.
Anyway to get posted whether or not it is possible to add unofficial patches to the game?

a few unofficial patches are up under the MODs otherwise any from http://nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=category&cat_id=12 should be fine.

Thank you I was just wondering cuzz I know that patches may alter the executable files some times and with digital content now and days like here that may mess up your game hence you end up stuck with what you get from the site even tho it is not patched as much as it should/could be...

all games are patched up to their final version from their developer, anything else you do, you're on your own.
just a bump

I read that. I did the install and while I had that crash message I did a reboot and it stopped and I was able to run the game successfully. I have Win 98SE. I don't know why but it worked.

as a general rule of thumb, I do not recommend using fallout on win98 if it's from gog.com
bump, and I noticed someone brought down my initial post, are there people on here who don't want help? who don't want to see other people play Fallout? or is there something wrong with my faq? let me know if there is. I don't want to misinform people.

Ok, after two hours of reading websites and readmes I finally installed The Ultimate Version of Fallout .
The procedure goes as following:
1) Install Fallout 1 from GOG.com
2) Find and install "Fallout_1_TeamX_Patch_ENG_1.2w" (either via nma or just google)
3) Install "f1child_patch" (again, nma)
4) Install "fallup13" - this is the TeamX patch 1.3.4 (nma)
5) Install "f1npcmod" from TeamX (again, nma)
6) Install "sfall1" (from http://timeslip.chorrol.com/sfall.html)
7) Install "Fallout1_High_Resolution_Patch_v1.3" (nma)
8) Open f1_res and set AUTO_SCRN_SIZE = 0, then your desired resolution (I use 800*600, anything above is just too darn small for my taste), then if you want, change the way ingame movies work, either fullscreen or not....up to you.Same with movie subtitles.
Run the game and enjoy it in all of its patched glory, WITH KILLABLE KIDS (not that I ever kill them, but the option is here), with better NPC interaction (armors, levelling..), with tweaks like mousewheel in the inventory etc, in higher resolution...
The Ultimate Fallout Experience awaits.
amended
I played it with the installation procedure above, I am so far in Junktown (having done Shady sands, Vault 15 and Khans) and zero problems, crashes, bugs...so far, at least.

Works brilliant! Thanks! :D
No problem : ).
It was always giving me a headache to install games that have mods, to figure out what works with what, what versions to use..etc...
So I am glad I finally found the best version of Fallout 1 : ).
Once I beat it (during christmas), I will have a look at Fallout 2 and post here the "best" procedure as well.
Only thing that bothers me is the fact that NMA hosts the files on atomicgamer which requires waiting for every file...annoying : /
All the necesarry files have only 2.53MB, so I uploaded them to rapidshare in one .rar file, with the numbers telling in which order to install them.
Here is the link:
http://rapidshare.com/files/176334055/The_Ultimate_Fallout_Installation.rar
Just download, unrar, install in the correct order (basically just extract the files to correct folders) and PLAY!
