Avast changed for the worse over the years.

Here's another vote for Avira as baseline and Malwarebytes as addition.
If I were using Windows, I'd stick with defender.

You know, all these antivirus programs open up new vulnerabilities and have a tendancy to interefere with the normal working of other software on the system.

You're probably safer with common sense + defender.

adaliabooks: I don't touch anti virus, I use a thing called common sense (and malware bytes of that goes wrong).

That being said disabling Windows Defender is more trouble than it's worth and seems to (surprisingly) be the least annoying anti virus I've ever used, so I let it stay.
Agreed. I do the same.

jtef: What do you people think of Avast, it has real time,
boot-up scan, and reports say it declares te lowest amount of false positives,
or at least it did last year
Avast is still quite ok (still boasting one of the highest detection rates), though it was better in terms of user experience a couple of years ago.

Cool thing is that it has a silent mode which you can enable and it won't pester you with anything, not even the usual "buy me, buy me now" ads you get with most freeware antiviruses.

That site puts at the very top of the list some rather shady AV. Caution advised.
