Well stop clicking on dodgy porn links. Windows Defender does me fine, but I don't go clicking on juicy fanny pictures.
I'd go with Kaspersky, they have a free version, now.

Windows defender seems to think it's normal to hog an entire CPU core every time any non Microsoft app does anything.

It's nowhere near that bad here.
A large dose of common sense/an alternate operating system.

If you're really worried, you could use an antivirus boot disk, like the ClamAV boot disk, but then you'd have to deal with dreadful things like command lines.

I like to use panda dome free version, isn't so hard on my old pc.
"u cant hack me I got norton"

I just use Windows Defender + common sense + MalwareBytes.
Avira + Malwarebytes. If you want something really low on resources then 360 Total Security.
Windows Defender or MS Security Essentials (depending on your Windows version) as "real time protection".

MalwareBytes as "occasional scan" or "something's fishy".

And Brain 1.0.

I'm already hacked by Norton...

Yeah a shame what became of this once legendary company (Norton Commander ftw...)

What do you people think of Avast, it has real time,
boot-up scan, and reports say it declares te lowest amount of false positives,
or at least it did last year
Same recommendation as PainOfSalvation: I've got Avira and Malwarebytes running on Windows 7 (both free editions).
I'd recommend Malwarebytes as well.

I can't tell if this is a joke post or not. I switched from Avast last year or the year before because of the number of false positives it gave me. It was such a nuisance that it wasn't worth keeping. I got Kaspersky instead and have been loving it since.

Not a joke, the said reports were on informatic magazines, could have been a somewhat paid comparision study,
or you could be a exceptional case (depends on what kind of file anyone works with),
But the kaspersky on the the other hand has been under suspicion for years, for what they do,
or what they backdoor on they programs
AVG has the heuristics without the cumbersome user experience of Avast
