rjbuffchix: Is there any guarantee it comes out DRM-free? A certain number of votes or monetary support that it needs? Or can a developer in theory "change their mind" and keep it Scheme-exclusive even in spite of all that?
avatar
Lucumo: Nothing is ever guaranteed, apart from your death :P But yeah, the physical version will be on DVD and USB-Stick, patches on their website most likely. And as Swedrami already said, digital version will highly likely be on GOG and other DRM-free places.
Well, the Kickstarter succeeded, so now you can only basically "pre-order" the game and other stuff...which will still count towards the stretch goals which weren't reached (Monk class and Linux version).
Hahaha! Ace response! Okay, that makes sense. Just wanted some clarity for myself. I am all about supporting developers but never really waded into the kickstarter sea yet. My apprehension is that I could end up funding something, only for a dev to turn around and give me a Scheme key instead of releasing the game DRM-free. In other words, I only want to condition my support on the game being DRM-free :)

Hehe, that's probably more an issue with smaller developers who failed to properly create their game, thus resulting in a dirty pile which GOG would reject. As for DRM-free, I'm pretty confident in this case. It's also the first time ever I supported/pre-ordered something because I hate buying the cat in the bag. While, in my opinion, the 100k goal is really low, there was already a lot of stuff done regarding the game (engine first and foremost). Still, considering they will translate this game in a lot of different languages and the more content there is, the more expensive it will be, I doubt this game will be too expansive. I mean, I certainly wish it was but there is only so much you can do with this amount of money. But as they said, they will release addons after 8-12 months, so properly sized content will definitely follow, in addition to what the community will do with the editor which seems to be pretty good. Well, for now it's just about sitting on our hands and waiting it out. One thing which I kinda dislike is that they will take feedback from people in the combat beta and beta. Considering that was tied to tiers, there could be "bad" feedback which would result in an easier/more mainstream game. And I really don't want to play something watered-down.
The large number of promised translations is probably the one thing that concerns me about this project. That could get very expensive with a game that will presumably have a lot of text (as you alluded to Lucumo). They already have core team members who are fluent in both English and German (and perhaps a few other languages such as French). Presumably they intend to commission translations for the other languages after the game is released on Early Access next year, which will hopefully bring in additional funds. They can't really pay for translations until everything is written in English / German anyway...

It would be great if they could get the Beta on GOG's "In development", too.

What's happening with their web page & forums?
How's everybody? Who will buy it on release, who backed it now. Backerkit late backing is live.

Backerkit surveys are coming. A GOG release seems quite probable, so I'd advise to choose DRM-free in the survey.

If anyone's interested, they funded only additional 6k, total of 126k. They need 140k for Monk, and more for Linux.

Game has gotten additional funding. More on kickstarter updates.
Yes, from Bavarian government.
The game still needs about another 10,500 Euros for Monk at launch. Other options require more money.

I'm also glad that I late backed this game, despite initial hesitations that it would eat all my time. I've talked with the devs and community for months now on their Discord server and found people generally friendly and responsive, even to long suggestions lists.

In some ways, Realms Beyond intends to be a better version of Temple of Elemental Evil (PC) that wasn't.
I did see a post from a Ceres staff member on their official forums on Feb. 2019 that they very likely will not be implementing more than the 8 base classes promised in the original Kickstarter pitch because they have too many features on their to-do list. However, it seems that statement was made before those government funds were announced... So maybe it's still possible that monks could make it in the game. They're planning on releasing on the game on early access in the relatively near future so perhaps if the game does well there it will allow them to put in another class or two.

Otherwise there is always the possibility of more classes being added in expansions or unofficially added through mods.

From the latest February 1st update (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ceresgames/realms-beyond-ashes-of-the-fallen/posts/2744020):

Combat Beta Status

We’re still working hard on completing the combat beta, but aren’t quite happy with its current state yet. Apart from a couple of bugs and missing elements (such as monster portraits and SFX), we are also working on the content and encounter design. As the combat beta will be the first public release of our game, we want to deliver a good first impression (especially since some people will likely show off the gameplay on stream or on YouTube). Therefore we can’t hastily release a half-baked and bug-ridden version of it, as this would taint the image of our game in the public eye. We ask you to be patient for a few more weeks, so we can release a polished version we can be proud of and you can enjoy without hiccups.

To make the waiting a little more bearable, here are a handful of screenshots from the first level of the combat demo (we don’t want to spoil the later levels yet!):

Is there any confirmation they intend to release on GOG?. Only just noticed this is a DnD type game (on steam) due to release this year

there's combat beta on steam, but they are working on sluggish speed. GOG will announce this when it has definite release date.
