Since the creators of the Civ games are tied to Steam I'm curious if GOG will ever be able to provide any Civ games higher than IV.

I am totally enjoying IV, it works flawlessly. and I am quite happy to be signed on with GOG.

They are not really tied to Steam, as an example Civ 6 is available on EGS, same for Civ 7. GOG simply is not really a good option for them as it does not generate sufficient revenue.

I hope it may change someday but this is the current situation, it seems.

Forget Civ and try newer Age of Wonders games instead. Planetfall is especially good.
I have a preference for 'Shadow Empire' these days. Another title that is available on gee ooh gee (radio dot com)
The Civilization games really did peek with Civ4.

In Civ5, they really minimized religion such that I never bought the game. Isabella isn't Isabella if she's not threatening to go to war with everyone that is the wrong religion (meaning not hers.)

If you like 4x games, you can also try Master of Orion and Master of Magic even though both are older.

Shadow Empire needs a graphical overhaul. There are good terrain mods out there already but nothing for the units. I want the units to look more like in Civ 2, then it would be perfect.

Complicated game, nothing for someone looking for a light cookie but surely interesting for anyone looking for a deep experience.

If memory serves, it does not need the client to work (a.k.a. DRM free).
Already part of the "DRM free list":

yea, reminds me of one the first things i encountered when i entered a wargaming social group as a rookie, completely familiar with civ,tw and C&C

you'd have these guys talking 'bout their games in terms of months, retired guys of course, or with too much money to spend, guys with gamelibraries the size of GoG's store, at least back then. they would do a turn a day!
You are mixing up to much stuff. Command and Conquer is a RTS, not a 4X game.

No clue about "TW"... probably "Total War"° (not on GOG), i generally write out the full name else as soon as no insider is reading it, it gets unnecessary difficult for them. °As well no 4X, it is a mix between RTS and TBS.

Yeah, everyone knows that 4X is really just an extremely lewd genre. One X naughtier than your typical XXX game! ;-)
Now i realize why i love some of them so much.

Anyway, in general i put them all inside the "Strategy/Tactics genre", so i usually do not pin it down very strict... and sometimes it is hard to tell. However... if someone is especially looking for a modern Civ game, then those "4X" simply will come closest to it.

That's the last one I bought, as I was getting kind of burned out on them even though Civ 4 was the best. Although I did get Civilization Beyond Earth, which was pretty decent and I did put some hours into it. I saw some complaints that it was just a reskinned Civ 5, so if that's true I guess I did play Civ 5.

Due to these two posts, you have instantly become one of my favorite people on this forum. XD

I have never played any Civ newer than IV because to my previous knowledge they all required an internet connection at least for activation. Since I do not have internet at home, this was never an option for me unless I was willing to haul my entire desktop to someone else's house long enough to activate. I mean, possible, sure, but annoying as hell. This is why I buy from GOG, offline installers all the way. But until this thread, I didn't know I could do the same with any newer version of Civ.

I would still much rather buy it from GOG, but if that's not possible, you've presented an acceptable alternative. Luckily for me, my ancient computer does meet the minimums for CivVI, though not by a whole lot, so I'll probably have to play on lower settings and smaller maps until I can upgrade. But that's better than not playing at all! :D

I have heard many times that CivIV is the best of the series, and it's easily my favorite of the ones I have, though I will also go back and play CivIII from time to time. Each version has their own charms and annoyances. But I have so badly wanted to try any of the newer versions just to see what they're like, which is why I'm so glad for Xeshra's posts. Even if IV ends up remaining my favorite, I've been wanting to try V or VI for years. Along with SimCity up to and including 4, Civilization is one of my all-time favorite game franchises, and it has irritated me for so long that they went to requiring internet to activate them.

Interesting; if I were to go back and play a previous Civ other than 4 it would be 2. I did put a lot of hours into 3, but for me, eventually the annoyances started to outweigh the charms, especially the pollution mechanics in the late game.
