I like shooters, in principle. I like uncomplicated "go in there, put bullets in the bad guys / things / hostile entities, survive" gameplay. I think it's funny to run around with big guns that make nice boomy sounds and plug critters in the face.

But I feel that the classic shooter is sort of being replaced with sort of more artsy shooters that want to do more than just put a player in a big environment with tactical options, a lot of enemies to shoot, and a lot of guns to shoot enemies with.

That's one of the things I really liked about Borderlands 2. It wasn't complex or artsy or something that took itself remotely seriously. It was just a game with a lot of guns and a lot of targets to use those guns on. Of course all the loot grindy aspects was meh, and most tactics revolved around close range encounters because everything spawned up real close or could close ground real fast. On top of that the damage mechanics became real wonky to promote more loot grinding and most of the guns you found were different kinds of terrible. But still, it was fun.

Doom 2016, it's fun in principle, but it's too much Serious Sam or Painkiller style arena fighting. You walk into an empty area, trigger a spawn script, all kinds of mayhem follow. And I really prefer when I can scope out enemies ahead of time, snipe some of them ahead of time, and generally decide my own approach and pacing.

In terms of MP, well, options abound but my interest in MP shooters peaked back in the days of Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, and Counter Strike beta. It declined rapidly thereafter and hasn't really picked up since.

These days, I'm playing more TBS and RPG than I'm playing shooters, though. Got quite a few shooters I haven't played, though, just simply haven't gotten around to it yet.

Oddeus: Since there are so few of them left, game developers shouldn´t encourage people to hunt the last of them :)

PoppyAppletree: I'd be in favour of hunting seagulls.

Is there a game where you shoot seagulls? I mean, besides GTA.
Don´t know about seagulls, but we have Moorhuhn: https://youtu.be/clkATEge9m4

Or chickens if you're pirating Crysis.

I hope you get that joke. :P

Haven't played the game yet, but yeah, I remember reading about that anti-piracy feature. And yeah, that would be good times, politely helping those poor starving bad guys load up on protein. :D

It's too bad that wasn't an unlockable part of the game, complete with appropriate sounds. Definitely the kind of low brow uncomplicated fun that would've made me buy the game in a heartbeat.

Me too :P
That's why I love Tyrian so much: carrot ship and banana canons.
I can only speak for myself.

The main turnoffs against modern shooter games:
-multiplayer-focused, online-focused...INSTANT turnoff (for any game, but it is rampant with these games).
-military-style. Goes against personal beliefs and goes against what I want in gaming (new and thought-provoking worlds to explore).

I am very finicky with which FPS games I like. I have a lot of love for the old school stuff like DOOM, though I maintain those games would be even better with added mechanics from role-playing games or horror games. As an example, Road Warrior/Quarantine II is probably the peak of old FPS games if my memory serves, if only we could get it on this site that would be amazing. The base of the gameplay is shooting but there is so much more with the driving and racing elements, not to mention the (imo) incredible world-building. The game feels like so much more than a typical shooter game. At least we have Crime Cities, a worthy and interesting approximation in its own right.

For modern games, I think Bioshock is really intriguing but would be vastly better if it added stuff from a game like Fallout: New Vegas; specifically a system like VATS and the amount of freedom/player choice*. Sadly it seems no one is bothering to even develop singleplayer shooter games at large, since the focus is all on multiplayer. That said, I don't think a pure shooter style modern AAA game would be all that interesting since I feel the gameplay is at its heart one-dimensional. The old games just do a much better job hiding it or even embracing it, if that makes sense. For instance, I am intrigued by Ion Maiden, as it maintains the old-school style. Whereas if it had modern graphics and modern mechanics like regenerating health, I do not think I would have any interest.

*(Note: I realize Bioshock is kind of a unique example as there are narrative reasons why they don't do this. That said, I take issue with how at least one spoilery event is handled, and feel the player absolutely should've had choice).
I have watched my cousins play Call of Duty, but I just did not enjoy the objectives.

I played Shooters like Timesplitters 2, since the modes are more casual and you do not need to be highly skilled.

Modern FPS games like Call of Duty are essentially gun adverts. I think there was a game that even had in-game links to buy the guns featured.
Would Saints Row games count as shooters?

Otherwise I guess not too many shooter games.
For me Story matters the most. So games like Metro series Mafia series will be the shooter games I am interested in.
And the Valve games of course.

Also I just played Broforce and it was crazy fun.

EDIT: How could I forget about Serious Sam games!! They are great fun. I really hope the later games would be released on GOG.

And here I thought those games were just Doritos adverts!

You should play the Bioshock series then, if you haven't already, it's pretty good in terms of story and setting (maybe as soon as it shows up around here :v). Then, I don't know if you'd consider it exactly a "shooter" but Alan Wake is great in terms of atmosphere, storytelling and characters, imho, so check that out too.

Personally, I like shooters, a lot. Doom 2016 was my goty back then, Devil Daggers was just great, then Bioshock, Halo, Alan Wake, Max Payne, Quantum Break, I loved all of them.

Bioshock is worth it for the first few minutes when you get to the "underworld" and see the city. Bladerunner eat your heart out.

I have the Alan Wake games in my library; just waiting for a little time to play them.
And yes, should GOG get the Bioshock series here, I would be more than happy to get them.
Same with Max Payne, available on mobile, but not here on GOG!! :(
There aren`t really that many shooter games worth their salt on GOG. But the list is growing. Swat 4 is one of the best, especially if you can hook it up to a voice activation utility. And I`ll always have a soft spot for Unreal Tournment which are pure shooters (although they do bore me a bit these days).

But I wouldn`t dismiss rpgs completely as Fallout New Vegas is a great shooter and rpg combined.
