Breja: Granted, I am no expert on either franchise, but it seems to me that just by the virtue of being a single-player game about killing demons on Mars there's more consistency in Doom than Quake ever had.
Original timeline:
Doom 3 is Mars
Doom 1 is Phobos, Deimos, Hell, Earth
Doom 2 is Earth
No Rest for the Living is Earth
Plutonia is Earth
TNT is Io (Jupiter)
New timeline:
Doom 3
Doom 1
Doom 2
Doom64 is Mars
2016 is Mars
Eternal is Earth (I think)
Dark Ages - honestly no clue. Seems like some dark sci-fi fantasy land.
And yes, all of those have a story. But as far as locations go in the original line, a grand total of one game takes place directly on Mars. And that's Doom 3, a prequel. But it fits perfectly as the starting point for the original games, as it explains how things started and does not conflict in any way with the original games, taking place on Mars itself. Same can't be said for Doom 64, which conflicts with TNT, Plutonia and No Rest for the Living, thus forking into an alternate timeline after Doom 2. Doom 64 claims Doomguy gets "stuck in hell", which would prevent the others from happening.
Romero also said this about Doom64:
https://www.shacknews.com/article/117322/terraform-the-making-of-doom-64 "They could do what they wanted," explained John Romero, co-founder of id, regarding the Doom 64 team at Midway. "Make it a different story, not even on the same narrative path.
That's what they did... "
As the nu-Dooms springboard themselves from the events of Doom 64, they are therefore incompatible with the original timeline, as far as canon goes. Then it's mostly a question of which one you prefer.
I personally prefer the original one as it's much more grounded. The nu-Dooms try way too hard to be edgy and the Marvel-esque plot really doesn't do it for me.
