Hi GOG, I like DRM free games, I also like buying new games that get updates.

gog /forum/general/games_that_treat_gog_customers_as_second_class_citizens_v2

Can we get a store tag where you get a solid commitment out of the dev team to maintain update parity with steam?

I value my games being eligible for updates more than I value them being DRM free out of the box. Especially for new releases with online components.

Until GOG can provide some confidence that buying a new game on this storefront won't feel like a mistake, you're going to remain a store exclusively useful for retro games, at least for me.

There's no way GOG would add something like that to the store for a variety of reasons, but there is however the "Games that treat GOG as second class citizens" thread in the forums which highlights games that get updated on Steam or elsewhere and not on GOG among other issues where the given game is superior on another platform and missing features on GOG.

It’s never going to happen. More to the point if you value updates more than drm free then no reason to shop here in the first place. DRM free is the only reason anyone would buy here, steam has a bigger library, cheaper prices (key stores), mature software, etc.
"Commitment to update parity" would not necessarily be a good thing.

Because sometimes games get censored/butchered with updates, like Churchel, for example. So in cases like that, GOG should not have update parity.

And I don't see why update parity should be privileged over feature parity. It wouldn't be fair for GOG to implement an update parity policy, yet neglect also and simultaneously to implement a feature parity policy.

From what i've heard: GOG gets updates for a number of devs within a short time, but GOG is sometimes very slow in updating the installers here.....especially if it's one of GOG's favored partners(those given preferential treatment by GOG).
My mother always told me:

"There is no DRM-free lunch."

To this day, I have no idea what she meant, but it sounds cool nonetheless, and that is good enough for me.

Given that GOG allows rolling back to a previous version this is something of a non-issue.

You can still have your blackface Chuchel if you prefer it.

No, it only allows you to rollback if you use galaxy. Offline installer users do not get this functionality.
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/provide_a_full_and_complete_changelogged_download_system

It is a key missing feature, and goes against the “galaxy is optional” principle.

We don't have favored partners or give preferential treatment to certain developers or publishers. All GOG GALAXY updates are applied automatically by the developers, while offline installers require GOG's assistance. We may miss that a certain title's offline installers are not up-to-date on an occasion - it's something we're continuously working on improving, so it doesn't happen in the future. Your reports help us fix this, and we greatly appreciate such support :)

So i'm guessing all the stuff some devs/partners have revealed to other goggers is all lies, then? What a relief.

I mean here I was, about to think that GOG is more or less like near any other corporation out there.....what with giving more favorable contract terms/etc to some partners over others.....but it seems that thankfully I was wrong.

It is said that in some distant regions of GOGBeartopia, mystics hear the distant voices of discrepancies derived from the APIs themselves and scribble them down on pieces of parchment that forever float in the data cloud: https://airtable.com/shrldLsErlUf3eHqS

P.S. The mystics only scribble down during weekends, due to having to put bread on the table (a weird societal thing, it seems) during weekdays.

An omen of truth, from the great GOGBear himself, no doubt!

My dust specs are also black, in their vast majority. Guess I live in a dystopian household.

*Ahem*
I disagree. There have been some extreme delays on Phoenix Point updates that were confirmed to be GOG's fault (see game forums)
After some messages to support, the problem has been slightly improved (from delays of over a month to barely a week) but it's still there, while this doesn't seem to happen with some other more popular titles.
Although, for some reason, no game in development seems to suffer those delays. Maybe it's because there's no curation or something?

Doesn't near every corporate office have one these days? ;)
(they're supposedly about as standard as the whiskey filled water coolers for support & janitorial staff, or so I hear)
