Oddeus: I watched The Dark Tower, The Predator and Star Wars: The Last Jedi in quick succession. And it was more than I could stomach. Now I´m slowly dying from inside...
Yeah, you know you're in trouble when The Dark Tower is the best of the three.

There is no coming back from watching Disney Wars. Once you have done so, you are done for.

Welcome to the club.
Ten minutes into The Dark Tower and I would of fell asleep and woken up at the end of Last Jedi. Hollywood has gone to the dogs with the BS and you can forget about anymore great movies.
There are few films that I could suggest:
1) Mandy. Pure style over substance in the best way possible. I usually despise this kind of movies, however: Nicolas Cage starring in a good movie, surreal slide into the madness, demon bikers from hell (albeit not really), weird cult as a target of revenge rampage, chainsaw duel, fantastic cinematography courtesy of the author of the beautiful Black Rainbow - all this sell this movie to me. It's a treat. At least for me. The title doesn't even appear for something like the first half an hour. Awesome.
2) Annihilation. Classic sci-fi with its fair share of horror. IMHO, a bit better than somewhat overhyped Arrival (and yes, the book IS better, if you ask me). It works, and it works rather well on a number of levels. Also, it touches upon one of my favourite themes in sci-fi: alien eco-systems and their enteractions with the earthly one.
3) The Void. Cults, body horror, space warp, surrealism, the whole deal. I haven't seen this one, but do intend to, and have seen good reviews.
4) Upgrade. I'm hesitant about suggesting this one. It has rather sharp changes in its tone as the story progresses. From the mellow, melodramatic even, tone of the supposedly "thoughtful" indie sci-fi to low-budget cyberpunky action-y flick to the paranoidal fiction. A lot of times it feels like rather tasteful parody of some of the recent "high-brow" sci-fi movies like Her and, of course, (again, overrated IMO) BR 2049. It's a glorious mess, that somehow manages to maintain the focus, posses a moderately intriguing setting and has an amusing ending. That said, all these sharp turns might be rather unpleasant to some viewers and low budget does shine through rather often. Plus, comedy bits near beginning are somewhat jarring.

scientiae: movies these days are made for a different (younger) demographic.
So the movies I watched as a kid (in the 80s) were all made for senior citizens?

Do you realize the original Die Hard is over 30 years old?

I hate to break it to you, but WE ARE SENIOR CITIZENS. XD

Sure, but were you already an old geezer in the 80s? :-P
From recent memory, a pretty decent sci-fi movie is Upgrade.
Also Watch Dredd from a couple of years ago.

I agree! Though I didn't like Arrival much.

considering most people think I'm a little kid even now, probably not. :P

I'm 44 years old and, my hand to god, I still get "Are your parents home?"
The long hair ripped jeans and Slayer shirts probably don't help.

Sounds like Benjamin Button syndrome to me!

(not really science fiction IMO, but I liked that movie)

KiNgBrAdLeY7: Have you seen Hellraiser? Iconic horror movies.

Oddeus: Yes, all of them multiple times :) Well, except the newest reboot (it is not available in Germany yet) and one of the older, that plays in cyberspace or something.
What about the comics? Some are very good.....better(imo) than some of the later movies, even.

And by cyberspace do you mean the one in SPACE on a station? Or something I didn't see yet?

Dition: somewhat overhyped Arrival.
I saw that a few months ago and I was greatly surprised. I didn't like the side arc that is revealed at the end but the focus on language was intriguing. What made you say it's somewhat overhyped?
