So I came across a debacle that might be useful for future reference. I know a parent that simultaneously spoils their kids and is overprotective, and that got me thinking, "hey, you should buy games from GOG" I would probably tell them (no need to pay me for advertising, just give a stipend in my GOG wallet) should they ever actually listen. But obviously they aren't going to let their kids play extremely violent video games or smut (not that you'd recommend that. I hope.) I already looked through the family friendly tags, but methinks it's skipping over huge portions that you wouldn't find.

Let's set some guidelines for different aspects:

Non-violent. Games that features no violent gameplay or imagery. I think any game I would recommend would be the Monkey Island games. It has some imagery, but it's so cartoonish and passed off as a joke, I wouldn't bother worrying about it. City building games might also work.

Cartoon violence. Violence is part of the game, but it's either abstracted well enough or is too silly to be taken seriously. I think most strategy games might work, but obviously Shantae and ilk would also work.

Violence against monsters, but not humans. Basically some people are fine with the murder of monsters as long as it's clear they're violent creatures. Humans or sympathetic creatures should not be part of the casual mayhem. Something like Quake might work, buuuut that still might have too much horrific imagery.

Violence against humans, but no blood or gore. The violence is abstract enough that you can shoot humans with real guns, but they don't spurt blood and spawn meat chunks when hit with explosives. I think Star Wars games hit this sweet spot, but maybe "yeah, you're killing people, but they're in stompy robots and tanks".

And mind you, this is on the basis of "Hey, maybe your kid would like ..." and there should be no Soldier of Fortune, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, or Jagged Alliance. I don't care if your parents let you play those games. This is a general recommendation thread that others would probably find helpful, not just for me.
Maybe Pajama Sam?

csanjuro: Maybe Pajama Sam?
Agreed! Unfortunately the rest of the Humongous games aren't here but they are on Steam.

The Manhole: Masterpiece Edition is another possiblity.

A problem I see is that older family-friendly games of some genres, especially platformers, might be too challenging for kids today. Or some genres might be too complex like SimCity.

Some general ideas through scrolling the bestselling pages, I didn't look too closely at these so people may disagree that they're appropriate for kids:
Incredible Machine Mega Pack (there's Contraption Maker on Steam too)
Terraria
Stardew Valley
Myst / Uru
Rayman series
certain Apogee games/platformers
Jazz Jackrabbit series
Racing games (like Star Wars Racer)
Theme Park
Theme Hospital (some risque humor?)
Sam & Max probably have some T-rated humor
Monkey Island likewise
Day of the Tentacle
Roller Coaster Tycoon series
SimCity series
Spelunky
Startopia
Litlte Big Adventure games I imagine are too rough for young people
Spore?
Worms series
Flatout racing games (ragdoll cartoon violence, maybe questionable song lyrics?)

Sorry to remind the obvious but Parenting is a Parents Only Responsibility
You already described some of the ramifications individuals criteria may have,
some may find Monopoly as a good influence to their kids but Doom not...
The point is not who is right or wrong, but both are valid respectable opinions

I'll never forget the akward moment and my brothers face/reaction
when years ago my kid nephew was playing some GTA V
by coincidence on some sex related mission in our presence...

Anyway, please don't take my comment as an aggresive useless reply
or an attempt to preach some morals but as the
-Not My responsibility At All. Parents: Do your own dilligence! Disclaimer-

Said that: I suggest The Incredible Machine Mega Pack
Only 4 words to vouch on it: Goldberg machines, physics simulator

Don't let its age/graphics scare you away:
Countless hours of thinking, trial and error, frustration and of course, Fun

Evil actions? Please Judge yourself,
You might find droping bowling balls, burning ropes and animals usage
(among others I can't think of right now) a bad influence...
Don't want to be that guy, but as someone who had overly protective parents that banned me from being able to play anything violent, drug usage, etc just caused me to learn how to sneak it. A kid will figure out how to play whatever game he wants to play, no matter what you do.

Now, with all that being said.
Most sports, racing, and simulation games would be fine, as long as they're not overly complicated.

Rayman series
Stardew Valley
RUNESCAPE - (not on GOG but 100% I'd make my kid play runescape, just a couple more years till he's old enough to log in :') )
Jenny LeClue - Detectivu

Trine games

Alba: A Wildlife Adventure

Steamworld Dig 1+2

Zombie Dinos from Planet Zeltoid - that's an edutainment game actually made for small kids, like Pajama Sam

Cat Quest

Loom (although that might be difficult for small kids because of the puzzles)

Rayman games and particularly Raving Rabbids, that's the kind of thing kids love :D

de Blob

cook serve delicious games

Costume Quest

Legend of Kyrandia 2

treasure adventure game
Neighbours From Hell
King's Quest
Space Qust

They're not on GOG, but the Dizzy games are a lot of fun
I'd say The Adventures of Shuggy and Gateways, although at times they might get a bit too difficult for small children (and the latter contains a surprising amount of blood).
I could also mention Silver, but I'm not sure as I didn't finish it.

Rayman games. 2 was my childhood.

Gruntz. Mostly a logical puzzle game with very cartoon violence.

Worms games. Can't go wrong with any Worms game.

Trine games could fit the bill too I'd say.

Most of the old-school platformers, like Commander Keen.

The Asterix games. If you'd let your kids read the comics, the games are basically the same, style-wise.

Most racing games should also be fine.
