noman: Negative comments about DOOM 3 BFG are way overblown here. First of all more than half of the complaints about this version aren't even applicable anymore, as they were addressed in the first patch of the game five years ago.
I tried both games last night (DOOM3 vanilla, and DOOM3 BFG), about an hour each, and here are my observations
1) DOOM3 BFG runs much better. You can control texture-LOD, FOV, brightness etc all from the menu.
2) BFG edition is still relentlessly dark. There's no drop in tension and atmosphere.
3) Flashlight addition is awesome. This is where DOOM 3 BFG is simply better than the original (unmodified) version. The flash light, only illuminates part of the screen, and charges down quickly too. Even when it's on, the overall image is still dark, and the tension about the monster closets remains the same. By the way, the flash light casts proper shadows and so do all the projectiles (imp's fireball for instance)
4) Sound effects seemed the same in both version. That could also be because I can't turn on EAX, as my XFi Titanium sound card recently died.
I uninstalled the DOOM3 vanilla version, and will try to finish the BFG edition.
People who say this were never fans of Doom 3 in the first place as a HORROR title and wanted the game to be more like the classics instead of accepting it for what it was.
1 & 4: Agree, but in the case of running better, we're talking minor improvement and it is a minor + in a slew of negatives.
2: BFG edition was lightened up. Even in areas that are still dark we have
3: The flashlight ruins an important mechanic of Doom. People can cry till they're blue in the face about how 'unrealistic' it was (despite not caring that scientists in the game still need glasses in 2145) but it was an important gameplay mechanic that added an important choice every second of the game from start to finish.
Further, you apparently didn't even notice the increased movement speed and vast increase to the ammo you get. Doom 3 was already a bit too easy and these 'enhancements' further remove from the horror aspect turning it into a poor corridor shooter.
Then we have issues like the mods not working in BFG edition. Last I checked there was a single mod for BFG edition and it was a graphical mod that sounds like a pain to set up.
Then we have the censorship. I don't recall as much in standard Doom 3 but Resurrection of Evil has horrible censorship. All of the new arcade machines were replaced with Turkey Turbo Puncher from Doom 3 and the tense hazmat sequence later in the game was completely removed.
So yeah, Casual Doom 3 'fans' and people who have never played Doom 3 before can certainly enjoy BFG edition but for those of us that are actual fans of Doom 3, BFG edition's only positives are the new exclusive mission packs Lost Mission for Doom 3 and No Rest for the Living for Doom 2.
