The easiest RPG i ever played was Dungeonsiege 2.

The biggest advantage is nothing is carved in stone with your character build, so you dont have to worry about making rookie mistakes.

The other big advantage is the bad guy re-spawn that gives you the ability to re-run earlier levels as many times as you want in order to build up your character strength as much as you want before taking on a new level or that boss you just could not defeat..... this ability is a massive "in your face" to games like Neverwinter nights 2!

In neverwinter nights 2, if you get to the end and find you are not strong enough, well that's tough luck - In Dungeonsiege 2 if you get to the end or any point in the game and find you are not tough enough, you can run back to earlier levels and pump more experience.... i just have to say again, being able to run back and gain more experience is such HUGE "in your face" to neverwinter nights 2

I enjoyed that game too. Although it doesn't follow the original game's playstyle or anything.

Which probably a number of other games do too.

Hmmm... FF X was a decent intro for RPG's. Had a bit of everything, and smooth turn based combat.

I played Dungeonsiege 1 after playing Dungeonsiege 2 .... i kept a huge stash of weapons to collect later on as i do in Dungeonsiege 2, but the weapons all vanished after reloading the game the next day, OMG i was pissed, stopped playing dungeonsiege 1 then and there, uninstalled it, never went back!

Another thing i liked about Dungeonsiege 2 is that it has simple 'crafting' which is really well set up. I have seen crafting in a few other games like Neverwinter nights 2, but, seemed to complicated for my taste.

I don't recall any crafting...

Hmmm That's why... I was thinking Dungeonseige 3 (PS3). My mistake.

I have DS3 - i did not like it.... not that there is anything wrong with it, i just much prefer the more free flowing, details take care of themselves, type of game that DS2 is

aem2169: Hello All,
I new hear and want to start playing RPG Games but I have no idea where to start. Up to this point I've played Adventure Games, which I love. I will be playing on my computer which is new but not extremely high tech. I would love any ideas or suggestions as to what games might be good to start. Would love to have fun and make some new friends.
I would strongly suggest to try Avernum: Escape from the Pit:
https://www.gog.com/game/avernum_escape_from_the_pit

It's really nice choice for beginner for many reasons:

1.Detailed (but not tormenting) tutorial at the beginning of the game, explaining all basic stuff like control/interface/etc.
2.Very moderated difficulty level (playing on normal should provide you nice experience, without stress at the beginning).
3.Very "user friendly" levelling of your character (every time it requires the same amount of XP, it's quite often, skills are very self-explanatory, so it's encouraging you to experiment and allows to make "corrections" during game.
4.Quests are generally logic, not containing any weird or cryptic stuff to perform in order to finish them, and due to quite "open" character of the game, you're free to explore world, gather more money/stuff/experience if you have any difficulty in progressing in more "problematic" areas.

For some people though the problem with this game is that it contains quite a lot of text and graphics/animation are not something especially spectacular... But for me personally both are not a problem at all.

It's not a bad option to try one of those games like Mars: War Logs or Jade Empire, which are rather action games with cRPG elements, but I assumed that you're rather looking for some more "classic" style cRPG.
Everyone here is awesome. I have some really good ideas thanks to all of you. I'll keep you updated and let you know what one I decided on as I'm sure I'll be needing help. Thank you, Thank you!!

Lifthrasil: Why not start with the best ones? Get The Witcher 3 (the best modern RPG) and Ultima 7 (my personal favourite and the first RPG I played). Don't worry, you don't have to have played the previous games in the series to enjoy them. Once you got the hang of RPGs, continue with Gothic / Gothic 2. They have a bit harder combat, but a great atmosphere, good story and a convincingly built open world.
I was looking at Witcher 3 and it sounds like a great game just wasn't sure about the difficulty level.

I liked DS2 when In played it, but disliked the respawns when having to go to old areas to finish them when I got new abilities like the ghost talk abiility. They could have made a few areas respawnable and made it easy to XP farm without needing to make every area respawnable, and the game would be much more tolerable. It is still a good game, though.

It has three difficulty settings and the easiest makes combat indeed easy but you still get to experience the full story.

Carn't say i had that same problem? Because of the teleporter map system, you only ever need to clear an area once and you never have to clear it again if you dont want to.

The only reasons you would clear an area again is for more experience/loot or to complete a secondary mission, and if doing a secondary mission, you usually dont have to clear the whole area, just a quarter or half section of it and in adition to that, you can create your own temporary teleporters! (especially handy if you need to go to the inn and swap a party member and then go directly back to your original position)

Edit: I forgot to mention.... some of the secondary missions are a bit of a drag, and even though i have played through the game several times, there are a few that are just fuckstick impossible to complete (and i am too stubborn to google it)

Darvond: These people suggesting Balder's Gate, they confuse me. How about some Avernum for ya?
This one I'm going to check out .Sounds like it might be a great place to start. Thank You

StingingVelvet: If you want a "point and click" style RPG, I would recommend the original Fallout. It's a wonderful game, really encapsulates the genre in a lot of ways, and will run on any PC at this point. It's turn-based, which might be better for an adventure gamer, and has a great story with lots of cool dialogs.

If you want something 3D and more of an action combat style, I'd suggest Elder Scrolls Oblivion if your PC can run it. It was basically made as a first RPG for Xbox gamers at the time, and is easy to learn and play. The story and dialog isn't the greatest but it's okay. It still looks pretty good today too. Fable is another "first RPG game" kind of 3D action RPG, as well.
I was actually looking at Fable: The Lost Chapters as a place to begin. I'll check out Fallout as well.
Consider checking out Eschalon: Book I, which is free both here and on Steam.
