Of course, when you mention "birdsong", it makes me think of the intro to Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring", which features a high bassoon solo. The bassoon *is* a woodwind, and the part is high (relative to the instrument's range), but the bassoon is clearly not an upper woodwind.

(Case in point: If I were to play that part on clarinet (appropriately transposed, of course), I wouldn't even think about the range, but on bassoon I do, and it's high enough that I need a harder 1st bassoon read to play it, as it won't come out on a softer 2nd bassoon reed.)

By the way, I do like high bassoon, and I also like low clarinet; the Bb clarinet can actually get down to (in concert pitch) the D below middle C, which is lower than most people not familiar with the instrument expect; even better, it's rather easy to play the clarinet in this range, so it can even be used in music meant for beginners.

Then I would say we're like night and day; I think electric guitar is such a fundamental instrument that most songs would be empty without it. However, for me it really doesn't what people add or subtract in their mixes as long as it sounds good and clean.

What about all the songs written and performed before the electric guitar was invented?

Maybe the original composer would've loved some electric guitar. No way to know because they're probably all dead now. ;-)

EDIT: I'm eclectic so I practically like everything, and even though I wrote it's such a fundamental instrument, I didn't literally mean that most songs must/should have it, and "therefore I don't like everything before the e-guitar.
