Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls
This is an action spin-off/side story set between Danganronpa 1&2 (which are mystery/puzzle games, sort of like Phoenix Wright). It does so much right, it's frustrating that it isn't better over-all. The story is dark and interesting; I really want to know how it all turns out. The protagonists are fun, the badguys are striking, and the dialogue is good. It's just that ... it is, as mentioned, an action spin-off. A third person-shooter, basically, and the action is ... not great. You have multiple bullet types, but only one of them deals direct damage, and there's pretty minimal enemy variety, which makes it feel repetitious. There's also very little sense of weight when you hit an enemy, unless you hit its weak point. For a limited time (it depletes a meter, which you need to find items to refill), you can enter a "super-mode," where you take control of the secondary characters and slash everything to death in melee combat; that's about as rudimentary as it could possibly be. Lock onto the enemy, and keep mashing that button. It's all functional enough, but kind of bland. I'll absolutely finish it, though, no question. Got to see how things turn out.
