Crosmando: Anyone interested, Daggerfall and Arena are freeware, you can download them here:
http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_EN
http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?title=Arena_:_ArenaSetup_EN
But than I have to use DOSbox, I was hoping this anthology makes Arena and Daggerfall work natively for Windows.

Elmofongo: Is it possible to make an RPG without the number crunching?
avatar
timppu: Well, every game needs to crunch some 0 and 1 numbers. a lot.

If there were e.g. no hit points, how could the game decide when you can stop beating the dead horse?
If you're doing it on a computer you need numbers, sure. But there are better ways than comparing one huge HP number against damage numbers.

Location-based systems are nice and more realistic. Battles suddenly get interesting when you have to deal with different body parts being injured (RuneQuest comes to mind).

Systems that use large HP number but tie it more into your actual condition, instead of the Doing Fine / Nearly Dead dichotomy that D&D uses.

I'm sure there are others, those are just the ones that come to mind atm.

Unlikely, they lost the source-code

BETHESDA PLEASE RELEASE DAGGERFALL ON GOG!!!

I know I rage quitted that game one time, but that was more of my handling of the DOSbox than the game itself, and after playing around with Ultima Underworld I think I can handle Daggerfall.

The blog post says Arena and Daggerfall use "a DOS emulator" (i.e. DOSBox). Even if Bethesda had the source it would be very time-consuming to update it for native ports.

I wouldn't expect any noteworthy enhancements to the other games either (e.g. native widescreen support in Morrowind--you'll probably still have to use third-party methods).

Crosmando already linked to the solution but here it is again: DaggerfallSetup and ArenaSetup. These are pre-packaged Windows installers with DOSBox all ready to go, just like GOG's installers.

You'll probably want to set the mouselook mode in Daggerfall (disabled by default).

pi4t: Note: Spoilers for TES 3-5 ahead

Oddly enough, I found it much easier to roleplay in Morrowind ...snip...

Cheer up, though, Skyrim and Oblivion ARE roleplaying games. By one definition, they're far more so than Morrowind. After all, in 'Skyblivion' the game is roleplaying for you most of the time, while you're left to click a few buttons and attack stuff! In Morrowind, you roleplay for yourself. Maybe we need a new term for that? Games Allowing RolePlaying, or GARPs?
LOL. And so true. There's a reason why people are still playing Morrowind more than a decade after its release. It and Planescape: Torment are the only games where I really got immersed in the world.

I guess you mean this.

Yep, though it's a while off
It's simple, if this comes to Gog, I'll buy it.
Nice anthology, but expensive. They should have included Battespire and Redguard, patched for modern computers.

Great for collectors, but too expensive for me.

DaCostaBR: I saw that earlier today. I could never bring myself to buy something like this knowing that the anthology will be obsolete sooner or later when they release another one, so might as well buy them individually.

inc09nito: Well you don't know that. TESO is on its way and remember what happened to Warcraft series when they made it into MMO...
Isn't that being made by a different company than the one that made the single player games though?
What age rating will this get? Daggerfal had *gasp* tits.
As did battlespire. I remember teenage me loved that character screen screen for female, hehe. Funny that games seem to have gone backwards in terms of prudishness since the 90's

Crosmando: Not sure how I even get into these arguments
avatar
jamotide: Haha, don't worry about it, Jmich is for some reason trying to convince people here that player level scaling can be a good thing and we should give it a chance. Yet the only good examples of level scaling we found were the games where it is so miniscule that it is basically unnecessary and hardly noticable, like Wiz8 or JA2.
While you (among others) tried for what ever reason to prove level scaling being inherently evil and always bad.....

While there are really bad examples, there's also a lot of examples that work for a rather large part of gamers - which you still fail to accept. Yes, it may not work at all for you - we accept that. Still doesn't make your or Crosmando's opinion or preferences better then others.

That and necroing the same arguments again and again, even for the 579. time 7 years later, insulting others with different opinion deeming them as not worthy / not true RPG fans / console gamers.... no nothing to worry about. We all know WHO looks bad, silly and narrow-minded here.
