F4LL0UT: ...And seriously, what's wrong with you? ... You're not gonna change how everyone rates and reviews game, it's YOUR job to understand how to interpret reviews.
I think mostly nothing is wrong with anyone here. It's reasonable to observe that 60% 4.5 and 5 star ratings do not posses much discriminative power. The star rating is mostly useless and could be removed. Even reviews are quite often kind of the same superficial "great game, thumbs up" over and over. Not much to interpret. But the rating system could also be changed and improved, not by us but by GOG. We made some proposals here, all we can do.
But if they got rid of the current rating system I would have no idea what to buy! I only buy five star games!!

Yes, that's true. Thorough reviews of old games from an actual perspective are quite rare or I just don't find them.

Especially from a modern perspective.

And then games like Zork would have absolutely horrid reviews, because in this day and age: if the graphics suck = the game sucks. Not how I think, but I am sure quite a lot of people on gog feel that way.

The Zork anthology has a four and a half star average on GOG.

Neither do the 1-2 star ratings. It's pretty much balanced. Asking the people who cheer too much at a game to turn it down a little doesn't make any sense when taking into account that there's people who give 1 star ratings either because they slightly disliked a game or hated it simply because they consider it overrated - or even just to "balance things out" (yeah, there's people who only give the most extreme ratings to give their vote more weight). The behaviour that makes people deliver 5 star ratings everywhere is also true for 1 star ratings so really, just screw it. <.<

RaggieRags: It would be great if GOG reviews would be useful on finding how well old games have aged. It's tough to find reviews of old games as it is.

Methinks all the "OMG I'm so happy this is on GOG I used to play this as a child and I loved it!!!" reviews could be flat out deleted. Nobody cares about your childhood. How good the game is NOW is all that matters. I personally don't review any games I haven't played extensively in recent years.
Exactly, and amen. If you are blinded by nostalgia, you don't need a fellow addict to tell you to buy your fix. If you are someone who did not play said game when it was current tech, these kinds of biased and inflated reviews are of no use whatsoever. Only the reviews from those who have played the game for the first time recently are of any import.
