Okay so I'm in the market for a laptop that will allow me to play the majority of these games without paying more than 600$. The games I want to play are NWN2, BG, IWD, Arcanum and Bloodlines Vampire Masquerade. If anyone can send me the link of a laptop for sale that can run these games (a specific laptop, preferably new), it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for helping a noob! (I don't quite understand graphic card specifications and such).

You might as well cross NWN2 off that list as you'll have a hard time coming up with a laptop with a decent and most importantly dedicated graphics chip at that price range, unless you can find a super-duper good sale.

That said, I'm very content with my current Samsung lappie that I've had since last January which cost me some $480. Sure, it only has the so-so Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics, but it's a great little machine for GOG games: I estimate I could probably run 90-95% of the catalog without problem with the exception of the more graphics intensive titles like The Witcher 2, Alan Wake, Lucius, HoMM V, etc.

Since those are older games and not too graphically intensive, I'd recommend a laptop with an AMD Trinity APU (accelerated processing unit). AMD's integrated GPUs are a step ahead of Intel's and can also do some light gaming for recent releases on low-medium settings at 720p resolutions.

14" Lenovo IdeaPad - $450

15.6" Acer Aspire - $600

But, if you plan to do anything more CPU-intensive (strategy games like Civ V can be demanding for the CPU), an Intel CPU + integrated graphics (or possibly dedicated graphics) might be better. There are a lot more choices among Intel laptops. I've heard good things about Dell's recent Inspiron systems, such as this one:

Dell Inspiron 13z - $500

Finding laptops these days is tough, with so many different configurations, naming schemes (e.g. ultrabook vs. laptop).

Do you prefer a certain form factor, screen size, or other characteristic? Do you need an optical drive, or would you rather save the space and weight? How about storage - do you want something with solid state storage, or a standard mechanical hard drive?

First of all, thank you for the reply. I guess I'm not that concerned about screen size so long as its bigger than 11'. I don't need an optical drive since I plan on downloading games digitally, and the storage I could go with the standard. I was looking at that Acer aspire and it looks like a good choice. But tell me, what do you think about this HP DV 6.

specs:
Screen Size 15.6 inches
Max Screen Resolution 1366x768 pixels
Processor 2.8 GHz A-Series Quad-Core A8-4500M
RAM 6 GB DIMM
Hard Drive 750 GB
Graphics Coprocessor AMD Radeon HD 7640G
Wireless Type 802.11bgn
I think NWN2 might be too demanding for most laptops, but the others should work just fine.

That also seems like a decent option!

The thing is that under $700 or so it's difficult finding a good system with a dedicated GPU. But you can check this site to see comparisons of different GPUs that you find (typically Intel HD 4000 vs AMD 76xxG for the integrated graphics).

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

In fact, the Intel chip wouldn't be that huge of a difference compared to AMD's Trinity chips.

I'll see if I can find more suggestions. One thing you may want to check out is the forum at notebookreview.com. There people can ask for recommendations based on what they want.

Would those be enough for NWN2 though? It's surprisingly punishing and picky about what it runs on.

I'm not saying they're not good choices, but NWN2 is almost deliberately designed to not run on laptops. So the OP might simply have to forgo that game. Similarly, Bloodlines either works or it doesn't. Really unpredictable, that one. With me, these days it just doesn't. But maybe DotEmu's DRM-free copy works better?

The integrated graphics will definitely be enough. NWN2 came out over 6 years ago, and today's current integrated graphics can run even modern games at low-medium settings on resolutions like 1366x768.

For example, here's the AMD HD 7640G integrated GPU, which is included in the laptops I recommended, running Metro 2033.

Bloodlines is not available on DotEmu anymore.

Those are very solid specs for what you're seeking. Is it this one?

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-V3-571G-6407-15-6-Inch-Laptop/dp/B009JXK1WQ

Honestly, that's an amazing deal for an Ivy Bridge laptop, and the reviews are quite good. The nVidia 630M is almost twice as powerful as the integrated AMD GPU, and the nice thing is that for that laptop you'll have switchable graphics. That is, when you're on battery and not gaming, you'll be using the Intel integrated GPU to save battery life.

nVidia Optimus technology will switch the GPU automatically when you launch a game or do something else that requires heavy GPU use.

I think you found a winner!

And that will run NWN2 no problem, though sometimes with older games you might need to tinker with driver settings. But in terms of power and capability, it will handle NWN 2 just fine.

Yeah that's the laptop! Wouldn't let me paste the url for some reason. Thanks a lot for your help I'm going to purchase that one right now! Talk to you later, I'll let you know on this post in the future how it works out. Thanks again, greatly appreciated.

I have the same gpu as the laptop above, and I can say it can play games pretty well. The gt630m is quite good for GOG games although you might have to tone down some settings when playing games like metro 2033, crysis 2.... but it can generally play well.. it should be more than enough. Should be no trouble playing NWN 2, by looking at the recommended specs it asks for.

Thanks for the feedback and the link! Looks like I will be playing more than infinity engine games after all.
