Did you try turning it off and on again? Did you make sure the plug was in? ;)
Probably PC related. Perhaps UAC/account settings, an OS that's not supported, over protective antivirus, ...

I have a machine for old games, so it works out in the end. My problem is that the machine is unreliable, and I'd rather play on my not-old PC, so it's frustrating when games advertised to work on PC similar to mine also don't do that, like TA Kingdoms (my most recent experience). There are games like Zeus which work on both, and also look amazing on both(!), so it's always nice to see something like that.

It's an old game problem, and not necessarily a GOG problem, but for me it's a GOG problem because all my old games are from here.
Keep in mind there are a few games here that are supposed to look that way and aren't necessarily bugged or broken.

Well, yes, but am I talking about those ones? No.

Most recent game which burned me is Total Annihilation Kingdoms. I think it will look better once I take to the old PC..after I make that PC work again, that is.
Some games require a bit of manual tweaking on some systems to work. I had to tweak Alone in the Dark's DOSbox settings for example to get the game to run stable and audio to work right. There is no one single setting for the game that will work with all PCs though apparently so not easy to make it work out of the box for everyone all at once from what I understand. There are probably a bunch of games in a similar boat though too. Mind you, whenever I've had a problem I head to the game specific forums here and usually find a solution within a short time period, or contact GOG support and within a few hours to a few days they come back with some suggestions and so far either the forums, GOG support or some random web searching I did as well have managed to solve my problems with every GOG game that I've had so I'm pretty happy overall.

When it comes to making old games look exactly as they did back in the day though, it may require hooking up an old fashioned CRT monitor to get that authentic look and feel, or to avoid resolution or aspect ratio related issues. There are some other nifty ways to handle it using some addons though too. There are enhancements for CRT simulation for DOSbox or alternatives which use pixel shaders to simulate the various aspects of CRT monitors and can make old games truly look like they're being played on old school crappy CRT monitors or televisions. They can really enhance the realism of that original gaming experience. If anyone is into that sort of thing searching for "CRT simulation" in the forums should yield some links. I've got them bookmarked somewhere but can't find them.

I have Total Annihilation Kingdoms but haven't tried it yet though.
