Title says it all. I'm a long time Steam user, currently have 90 titles with Steam, but I've never bought off GOG until today.
I was interested in the Gothic II Gold pack and decided to buy it for $10. I let it start downloading and browse a few Gothic forums only to find that Gamersgate sell the entire Gothic Universe pack for $17, only $7 more than what I paid for one game.
'Bugger', I thought. I should have looked around before pressing buy, but my enthusiasm got the better of me.
So I let the downloader do its thing and go off to do some work. When I come back ready to play, I double click on the Gothic II exe and it tells me it's corrupt and I have to redownload.
That sucks. Being an Australian broadband customer means that I only get a limited download limit per month. Downloads made through Steam don't count becuase my ISP has content servers. They don't for GOG.
So now I'm downloading again, and really wishing I never purchased it from GOG.
After this experience I will be very hesitant to make another purchase through GOG again.
hi. follow 'australian' here (imported one :) )
sorry to hear about your trouble. I know that download limit sucks.
What ISP you are using?
I am on optus cable and I had never had a problem with downloading the games from gog.
Give it another try. you had to be just really unlucky. for added safety maybe use the downloader and don't download anything else at the time (turn off your torrents for example. they can mess up with your connection).
there is plenty of awesome stuff here and community is great. It would be wasteful to abandon that because of one bad experience :)
and btw. welcome :)
I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but don't let it deter you from continuing to use GOG. All the people who hang out here praise GOG for a reason: It is absolutely fabulous ;-) Of course, your own experiences with something counts more than others', but it sounds to me like the bad experience is the fault of your ISP, not of GOG. There are quite a few other Australians on this board, perhaps comparing experiences with them would be helpful?
[EDIT] Ah, there's one now :-)

You're not the only one here with caps on their broadband (but I'm not...). What you've said here isn't anything new. And what if the content downloaded from GG is corrupted? You go there and bitch about it?
Just because GOG is new and different doesn't mean it's ripe for criticsm.
Sorry to hear that so far your first experience has been less than positive. I know there have been a fair number of instances of corrupt downloads, but I'm not sure what the cause is (perhaps someone else can fill us both in on this), or if it's even something GOG has control over. Not really sure what the complaint about the price is about, as you obviously felt that Gothic 2 was worth the $10 you paid, and if your goal had been to find the lowest price around it seems that looking at what options were available would be something you'd do before you bought the game.
Also, while I can somewhat understand your frustration at using up some of the limited amount of bandwidth you have only to get a corrupted file, you seem to be awfully quick to decry GOG when you've yet to even install the game, let alone play it. So take a deep breath, calm down a bit, and either redownload the game you bought or wait a few hours for someone to suggest ways to minimize the chance of a corrupted download before trying again. If the problem persists you should also contact GOG for support, as they're usually quite good at getting problems cleared up.
Sorry to hear about the download cap. I know how much it sucks. Anyway, I assume you're using the GOG downloader, which at its current state is quite sucky. You might want to try using a browser download manager to download it via browser.

Michael, noone is above criticism, except possibly for fascist dictators. GOG is the greatest thing since hard drives, but that does not mean it is perfect. It comes damned close, but we should never cease to strive for perfection, hence criticism has its place.

Not when the problem isn't really GOG related.
Thanks for the feedback. I've gotten rid of the downloader and will redownload via Opera.
I never experienced corrupt installer... but I never download something as big as Gothic, anyway...

You didn't argue that it wasn't, you just jumped in the guy's face. Read my first post. I did argue that it wasn't GOG related, and without jumping in his face.
But whether or not this particular issue is GOG related, they still don't reside in a magical "no criticism" zone.
I have a bandwidth cap too it sucks. I use the GOG downloader for everything and have never had a problem with the downloader. My ISP on the otherhand has jacked me a couple of times causing problems.
One little thing about the price. That $7 more was because on GG it was on sale. Here you got it at plain old regular price and you don't need an internet connection to install it. :)
Warg, have you downloaded any of the free games that are available here? They're a lot smaller and if nothing else they're a faster way to test where the corruption problem stems from.
Which ISP are you using? More out of curiosity than any suspicion of a fault

And me. Oh wait, same difference...
I'm with Internode.
Probably the most reliable Aussie ISP there is.
My complaint regarding the price was more a self reflective critism that I didn't bother to compare prices than it was a dig at GOG.
