By that I mean the cabinet version. If so, what game? Has it been worth the investment? And have you had any problems (maintenance, etc)?

I got to thinking about it while checking out this link on wikipedia. Take a look at the "List of Popular Arcade Games" section. I'm sure those of you over, say, 40 years old will get pleasant nostalgia from the list.

I'm sure there is some component of nostalgia contributing to this, but I really think it would be cool to have a Time Pilot or Pole Position machine. My older son is just getting to age where I think he would get a kick out of it, too.

I'm not quite old enough, but I think an emulator would be a better choice today, as you'd be able to have an extensive library in a single box.
It shouldn't require much hardware wise, and it'd be fully possible to build it into an existing cabinet.
I don't (always wanted one though, even considered building one with MAME) but I know one of the guys from Penny Arcade has one of those ones where you can change the motherboard to change games.
In high school a buddy of mine, and a really good bass player, had an authentic TRON. That was 25 years ago so I don't know if the cabinet or the guy exist anymore.

I toyed with getting one for the B&B but when you play one of those things in an arcade or bar you fail to acknowledge how LOUD THEY ARE. Take it out of the social setting and put it in someone's living room and you can hear that damn thing down the street.

I don't. But one of my friends used to have a football/soccer cabinet in his house. Ahhh, glorious days.
No, emulation is good enough for me, so I'm not sure I would really want to have an arcade video game in my home. However, I would love to own a pinball machine.

I briefly had possesion of an old space invaders cabinet as a friend was inbetween permenant residences. I kept it in my art studio above the shop i ran. Sadly word spread of this wonder and it was moved to secure storage for it's own safety due to curiosity seekers trying to get at it / pestering me at work and hanging around the shop.
I can tell you as well - never try to move one of those buggers up or down six flights of medieval stairs either!
My mate still has it and still plays it once a day - or did last time I saw him.
I actually had a MAME emulator about ten years and two computers ago. I really enjoyed it, too. Had about 60-70 roms. For some strange reason, I became excellent at a game called Bank Panic. It was strange because I had never even seen that game in an arcade, much less played it.

While I enjoyed playing from an emulator, there's something missing. Playing with the aswd keys or the number pad just isn't the same as standing in front of that machine, using its controllers and feeling the music from the speakers, not just hearing it. The gameplay may be the same, but the game experience is different. I'd love for my son to experience a game the same way I did, just to see what he thought about it.

As for pinball machines, I thought of getting one of those, too. If I ever do, I'm going to look for a machine called Eight Ball Deluxe. Best pinball machine ever (imo, of course).

That's pretty much why im not into most "arcade style" games on PC / console - it deserves the cabinet (and there were so many unique cabs too!).

Yeah, it's funny. After I replaced my computer with the emulator, I never replaced the emulator even though I enjoyed it. I just didn't miss it.

*goes to ring for more burgers and laxatives
I wish, but if I did manage to get one I would love to either have Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, the Capcom Dungeons and Dragons game, Darius Gaiden, or any Metal Slug cabinet.
No, though I remember a nearby Nickelcade where I live was trying to shed some machines several years back, cheap, and I wish to god I would have bought a stand-up, coin-op, cabinet box version of Ataxx!, my favorite arcade game of all time.
