A lot of people on this forum, and PC gaming forums in general, tend to be from countries that do not speak English natively. You guys do AWESOME at communicating though, don't think for a second this thread is about mocking you.

What I am curious about is, during a forum debate or argument have you ever suddenly realized your translation mistake is what caused you to be upset? How often does this occur? Do you mention it or hide it?

As someone who likes to debate on forums I am just curious.

Well, as already mentionned elsewhere, I can't forget the moment where I realised, after a graduation exam, that I had written my whole King Kong summary with "monk" instead of "monkey".

On these forums, it's mostly little things, such as particles I'd have used differently, etc. I tend to not notice the rest. I occasionally use a wrong word because in french it means what I expect it to mean in english... Sometimes, I do the opposite : using a wrong word because I don't dare to use a word that I suspect to mean something only in french.

Also, on a former forum where I used to be very active, I was famous for systematically writing "toyful" instead of "playful". And I've been encouraged to continue by people who adored that.

I also enjoy spotting germans through their use of commas.

As for big angers, well, yeah, I had a savage argument with a forumer I disliked, because of a word he used wrongly in my opinion. I've learnt since then that ALL english speakers use it WRONGLY.

Telika your English is better than any of ours. I actually have to keep a dictonary out when you are in here, and I was an Engish major...and a really good one...aside from my horrendous spelling.

From time to time I usually edit my posts minutes or seconds later after being posted, to correct some typos here and there, and as a perfectionist, I can't tolerate my own typos... (:P)

To avoid that or any problem that could end in a misunderstanding, I always re-read my messages before posting them, but I always find something later... (:P)

My grammar is terrible and I tend to use the same word more than once in sentences (words like also for example)

Mind you I am from Northern England and a Geordie in every sense of the word, born in Newcastle and now living outside Durham!

And I tend to sometimes accidentally hit reply with quote instead of just new post!!!!!

My English is pretty horrible, but I try my best.

In my defense, I have this weird disorder that I tend to misread a lot. I have to re-read everything in order to fully grasp it. Even then, I make mistakes.

One time was in seventh grade, where I needed translate and then read out loud some sentences, and I proudly read longest as youngest..

Embarrassing.

Funny thing, there is a sometimes forum member (an American) who shall remain nameless, who is always telling people how stupid they are and ripping them for their lack of English skills. The other day he totally missused a word and when I called him on it he logged off and hasn't posted since. Nice to see the other folks in here aren't so sensitive about the occasional flub.

But I do the same with my German posts, too. I like to play around with language a lot and that is reflected in my constantly editing, correcting, re-arranging and streamlining posts both before and (sometimes even years) after I've send them. Always chasing perfection, always hilariously failing to achieve it. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?

Articles. Enough said ;) Well, we don't have them in Polish so they all seem so unnecessary for me. Ok, perhaps not all of them but most.

There is definitely more than that, my English is not perfect that for sure... But I as long as you can understand me and I can understand you I don't see a big problem here.

The other thing is there are a lot of so-called false friend in Polish/English. Few examples:
- Actually and aktualny which means current or present
- Eventually and ewentualny which is somewhat similar to "possible" (but they are not synonyms!)
Those two I know so I'm pretty sure I always use them correctly but there might be some more that I'm unaware of...

But the best story I've heard is about a Polish guy who tried to pick a Swedish girl. His English was not very good and he had problems with pronunciation. He wanted to pay her a compliment but he said: "You are so sweat!" At the beginning the girl was shocked than started to laugh. Not surprisingly the romantic atmosphere was gone after that...

I met a girl in Tokyo and her ability in English was somewhat questionable (poor). I said something and followed it up with "Do you agree?" only for her to get offended because she thought I called her ugly.

Ha ha! (:D)

Yeah, in Japan when they say "ugly" in English, they say it almost exactly like "agree"... (:P)
This is commonly known as "Engrish", the way English is spoken in Asia.

In another millenium I used to frequent a mailing list for a certain PB(E)M game. Me and a buddy both played and I was kind of his mentor, so he used to phone me a lot and ask questions. So on the mailing list I meant to write that "he keeps bugging me", but instead wrote "he keeps buggering me".
