Fenixp: And now that I think about it, the other way to make it more replayable would be an actual character creation screen. You know, get a certain amount of currency, and buy upgrades / room / crew you want.
I think you hit the nail on the head with this. Just being able to choose a bonus (extra cash, weapon or crew member) at the beginning already made quite a difference in my modded playthroughs.

All 3 of them :-P

Good :P
FTLs main fun is upgrading your ship and finding equipment. This is different each playthough. All the while you get better at the game and improve your ability to manage these resources. Until you are near perfect at playing the game (meaning you win nearly all the time) the replayability is excellent. That point was reached after about 100 hours or so for me. I did not play with half the ships untill then.

Something like this?

You do not start with a single ship loadout and play the game regularly.
Instead, you are given a barebones ship hull and pick your starting gear, crew, augments, everything.
There are 72 possible starting combinations - 4x more than the number of default ships in vanilla FTL!

Hmm, someone starts a thread with the name "FTL kind of sucks." and gets almost 100 responses. I wonder how many responses I could get with a thread like "Wizardry 8 kind of sucks."... ;P

Not really. Your starting gear is always the same, you find pretty much the same weapons all the time in the shops.

I bet there are more different weapons on single dungeon level in Dungeons of Dredmor than in entire FTL game.

I haven't played it yet so I wouldn't know ^_^
Although, Wizardry 6 has been awesome so far.

Incidentally my incredibly slow connection has finished downloading Wiz 8 just now.

I know there are mods to fix it, but that doesn't invalidate critique of the main game. Thanks for the link tho.

Not really, the starting weapons are just a small part of the game. Yes you CAN sometimes find all of them, but when you find them is important and influences your strategy. Thats the great thing about the game, learning to utilize what you find. Other games may have more weapons, but the FTL weapons are very different in their utilization and effects.

Dreadmore might very well have tons of weapons, but its a RPG. FTL is a strategy game and would not benefit from 50 differently named lasers. The FTL weapons all have their use throughout the game, and except one or two will mostly not be outdated by others.
