So, my actually non-gaming girlfriend recently got sucked into The Last of Us and actually beat the thing. And now she wants more. And sadly something "like the Last of Us". Oh, and her birthday's coming up, so who knows...

I explained to her that it's near impossible to find something just like this game (considering that zombie games usually aren't that plot-heavy and TLoU is widely considered a rare masterpiece), so I checked out the most important requirements. She wants:
- zombies or something zombie-ish (I guess monsters like the ones in Dead Space would still qualify for her)
- if not zombies at least a post-apocalyptic scenario or "serious" horror in general
- a strong narrative
- must be a boxed game available on PS3 (doesn't have to be that recent, a used copy in a decent state would be okay as long as the game itself is a good match)
- it shouldn't be too hardcore or complex (clearly she can handle a 3D action game like TLoU if the narrative is gripping enough but for instance I think a game like Dead Island would be too combat heavy and an RPG like Fallout 3 a tad too complex)

Clearly the first thing I could think of was The Walking Dead (GOTY Edition). Considering that it's practically an interactive movie and that she loves the show I think nothing can possibly go wrong with this one. Plus, I never even considered buying the game for myself so I wouldn't feel like there's any major self-interest in this gift. :P

Still, I'd appreciate more suggestions. Somehow I can't think of anything except The Walking Dead. As I said, it doesn't necessarily have to be zombies, most importantly it should be horror or a post apocalyptic scenario with a strong narrative (but I'm also open for rather lighthearted suggestions since she also likes humorous zombie stuff so who knows). Considering that she loves Japanese cinema (and Japanese culture in general) I think that also a Japanese game with somewhat weird aesthetics might work.

Oh, and before anyone accuses me of being a cheap selfish bastard - it wouldn't be the only thing I'd gift her this year and I'd only gift her a game if I were positive that she's gonna enjoy it. :P

State of Decay comes to mind, but that's pc / xbox and you need so knee ply stew shun... :/
Hm, I haven't played The Last of Us, but The Walking Dead seems like the perfect fit. Can't really think of any other zombie game with a strong narrative ...

Another PS3 game I haven't played but that came out at more or less the same time and that I think was compared with The Last of Us is Beyond: Two Souls - have you looked into that one yet? (Not a zombie game though.)
Yup, The Walking Dead. Might be a far cry, but what about the new Tomb Raider? Very cinematic experience, and very well-presented too.

Hmm Dead Space? I don't know any other games like the Last of Us.

I did rent it and beat it and liked it alot, but I find it tremendously overpraised its just a linear survival action game. I might aswell have played Resident Evil Remake. The whole reason the game is extremely praised is because of Ellie a girl "WHO ACTS LIKE A NORMAL GIRL AND DOES NOT FALL IN THE STEREOTYPES OF FEMALE CHARACTERS IN GAMES" Yes and yet she ended up needing saving in the finale like a token woman. Also she does dumb wisecracks that it makes my eyes roll. I think its this new generation gamers who found their own Resident Evil 2/

Indeed, I've thought of this one since my GF loved how cinematic The Last of Us was and as far as I can tell Beyond is rather accessible. What most gamers disliked about the game might actually make it a good fit for my GF. The scenario is probably also well within the kind of stuff my GF enjoys (she also likes mystery thrillers and stuff).
post-apocalyptic horror with a strong narrative?

the only thing not mentioned yet in this thread is Metro 2033/Last Light I suppose

oh and Beyond Two Souls sucks ass just like everything David Cage ever wrote.I'm sure your gf will "enjoy" how there's a rape scenario every hour or so.

Funnily enough I've thought of Tomb Raider but I think the scneario might a bit off. To make it worse, the popularity of the franchise might make it look like a very generic choice for a gift.

Yeah, that wouldn't quite be the right thing, though, I guess. Still, decent suggestion-

Wow. Rape. I think she could handle it, though.

Going to be a tough call to match TLoU, but the same people who make it also make the Uncharted series. The Uncharted series has no zombies, but it is an excellent game and very cinematic with thought-provoking puzzles.

I should probably elaborated on that a bit more.Rape scenario's doesn't exist in BTS to provide characterization or to move the plot,no they are there because David Cage has a fetish for Ellen Page. And frankly that's the very least of the problems with the writting in Beyond.

Indeed, it's one of the reasons why I had a hard time convincing myself to buy it and why I almost didn't play it when I got it (and I had additional doubts since I totally didn't like the ridiculously overrated Uncharted by the same studio). It's just nothing new or original. When I first played it I remember sitting there and thinking "I should love this - a good stealth game, decent combat, nice plot and acting... but I feel nothing... NOTHING!". By all means, the execution is fantastic, but there still wasn't anything to keep me going. If it weren't for my GF I probably wouldn't have ever seen the ending. The game has a few exciting moments but it doesn't really deserve all the praise it got.

Haha, yeah. The funny thing is, when I played it I kept thinking: "man, what would Anita Sarkeesian say about this game? It's *totally* a 'male power fantasy' with an old and tired man still strong enough to protect a younger woman and a little girl". And then the Naughty Dog dude handed her the award and I puked.
Hm. Haven't played Folklore, but it might fit (though has some flaws, and is more fairy taleish than horrorish). Maybe Nier (heavily story/music based, although not cinematic in the way of a movie). Ico and SotC HD, though that's cinematic/atmospheric without being heavily story oriented.

I think a Darksiders collection just came out (although it's more 90s comic book ish than cinematic, and I remember getting irritated at a couple things in the first game and the second having a loot system might count as being too complicated). Or the first two Bioshock games.

The japanese comment makes me think that Okami would be a sure thing, but it doesn't have a retail release.

I really hope you're talking about Uncharted 2 and/or 3 because the first game was an utter disappointment to me (haven't tried the other two but a good friend of mine who also hated Uncharted 1 considered Uncharted 2 great so I guess there's hope). Most importantly, in my eyes there was *one* actual puzzle in the game and that one was a piece of cake by the standards of the old Tomb Raider games.

Uncharted 1 is for sure the weakest installment, 2&3 are much better.
what about silent hill? There was a HD collection released recently
