6 weeks of stress and individually doing 6 months of work originally allocated to 3 men has finally come to an end.
MY IT PROJECT IS FINISHED!!!
I plan to celebate by buying a book. Yes thats how exciting and poor my life is, I overcome the last real impediment to getting my degree and I can JUST afford to buy a book...
Anyone know a decent bit of screen video capture software that has extremely low overhead? I want to make a video run through of the app I've written but its running on my netbook and using the open source capture program called camstudio, it drops frames like they were hot coals.
I use Hypercam 2 when I can be bothered installing it...
It's not free, though.
I kinda don't like how it treats and films the "select area to record" though :
It magnifies the area you selected to full screen resolution, and it gets blocky (not pixelly, blocky - well, depending on the size of the area ... )
And watch out if you're trying to capture something that's using overlays. If it's software overlay, you can work around it. If it's a hardware overlay, though, you're probably up shit creek without a paddle. :(
Well it is an overlay type thing, one that specifically uses XP's transparency options because running the idenical app under vista results in all the transparent sections being rendered as bright chromakey green
Congratulations.
Camstudio would of been my first suggestion, since you can't use that: Try; VLC, it has a desktop capture feature, just be sure to minimise the actual VLC window, or the infinite windows (of capture of capture) will crash it all.

Hey, BOOKS ARE COOL!!!
Anyway, congratulations!
A book is a good choice. To celebrate completing my dissertation, I bought a DVD >_>.

Heh interesting you mention dissertations, the book I'm planning to buy is actually the doctoral thesis of my writing lecturer

I've used Wink to do demo/tutorial type stuff before. Not spectacular, but depending on what you need, it might work for you. No idea what it would do to a netbook though.
Congratulations!
And yes, books are quite awesome.
that's what she said
She was right as well.

ZamFear: Nah as good as that looks, it needs to be full video. I've got an animated avatar as part of the app and I wanted to show off the way it works. Might be something I can use for other applications though, cheers
Shame I tossed the old video capture hardware I had, thats just what I need. Oh well I might try the app on my media PC since its more powerful and see how that runs her

What I'd do for for he recording: run it in VMWare Workstation and use its recording feature. Granted, that might be slightly analogous to using a jumbo jet to cross the road, but other than having to run a virtual machine, I don't notice the overhead of recording. It does use its own codec however, so it'll probably need to be converted to something more common before sending it off to someone else. Not free but there is a 30-day trial.
Camstudio is already mentioned, but it might be able to do what you want, it's free too, so it doesn't hurt to try.
EDIT: Oh, right, you already had your own opinion about the latter option.

Grats on finishing, don't party too hard with that doctoral thesis.
Cheers. The saddest part is that I just did the math and I can't afford to party it up with a book on autobiographical writing, Windows 7 cost me $15 more than I planned and that threw my finances completely out of whack. Sad really
Congrats on completing your project dude :)
