Twilight: wait, what? I love The Fountain, but I didn't really notice a connection, except from having a few parallel storylines.
avatar
AndrewC: Maybe I just read to much into it; I was referring to the aspect of locking your lover into your memories and your inner world. In Inception it was pretty explicit and up front, as the main character couldn't let go of the representation of his lover, while in The Fountain, despite being more of a love story taking place across time, I read it as a desperate attempt to keep the one you love from dying by connecting with them on that deep emotional level and doing anything for them.

I mean, both were about not being willing to let go, but where Inception took the easy way out (she's dead but keeps haunting him), The Fountain took the more philosophical route (just how much are you willing to give to keep the one you care about).

But yet again, maybe I'm waaaay off the mark with that.
thanks, that's a good point... I'll have something to think about :) And also, you made me want to watch The Fountain again :)) (This time in HD!)

TheJadedMieu: There are, however, some games (Baldur's Gate, Beyond Good and Evil, Recettear) that I enjoy immensely, but cannot tell you why.
It just show that you have exquisitely good taste
avatar
TheJadedMieu: Half the time I see a movie (particularly a non-comedy) I just think "it was alright, I suppose" when practically everyone else says the movie was amazing and then it wins an Academy Award.
I also find that most movies that wins an Oscar is very standard... and meh... so far the ones I remember are usually those that don't. Old and crude saying: "taste is like the ass - divided"
"What makes a man turn neutral ... Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?"

Vitek: "What makes a man turn neutral ... Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?"
"I hate these filthy neutrals Kif! With enemies you know where they stand but with neutrals? Who knows! It sickens me."

"How very neutral of you!"

Mentalepsy: Now if you've never seen anything that you didn't think was mediocre, that's a little odd.
There are very few movies that I enjoy enough to watch over and over, most recently Scott Pilgrim. Those are the movies that I consider to be very good.

avatar
Mentalepsy: Do you ever think while you're playing "this or that is a really cool feature," or "this is a really interesting character," or that sort of thing, or do you just sit back and enjoy the ride without thinking too hard about it?
I suppose I do think that games have some nice features, but most of the time, the ones I remark on are little bits that add convenience.

I tend to relax and take a comedic approach to games and movies, noticing the little issues that they have and making fun of serious scenes, so much so that I get annoyed when LPers act all serious about the game they're playing.

Roberttitus: I can tell you why.... because Recettear is the shit... nuff said.

On a side note... know what else is the shit? Tales of the Abyss.... Just sayin' =)
My one problem with Recettear was that if you wanted to make your payments on time, there was no real opportunity to level up new heroes. I just used Louie throughout most of the game to take on the harder dungeons as they came up.

+1 for the TotA love.

Tell my wife hello.

Navagon: So if you find something incredibly boring or annoying you can't form an opinion based on that?
avatar
TheJadedMieu: I guess the problem is more distinguishing between "it was okay" and "it was good/great."

Maybe I just don't know enough about what makes a good game/movie.
That's absolutely the problem. You can't expect to have a critical opinion of something without first knowing why you should have one or how to start developing one. There's a book by James Monaco called How to Read a Film: Movies, Media, and Beyond; I suggest you read it and see if that does anything for you, and then of course start reading some other similar books as well. And have a look at Jonathan Rosenbaum's writing; he has a book called Essential Cinema: On the Necessity of Film Canons which has a list of films, some of which you might want to try watching critically for practice.

EDIT: And it might be fun to just go and take some classes on film if there's anything around you that is something you could afford, and port the knowledge you get to whatever medium you want to.

TVTropes is an amazing website for anyone, but is especially applicable in this case. Seriously you should go there. Srsly.

I'll give you that... I did the exact same thing. Louie is the best character though.... Caillou on the other hand is absolutely TERRIBLE. I never could figure out a use for him.... he is the equivalent of Edward the Bard from FFIV in my eyes.

As for TotA... You like the rest of the series or just it?

I enjoyed Symphonia, and I've been meaning to order Destiny and Eternia/Destiny 2 on Amazon one of these days, but they're kind of expensive. I'm also hoping that Tales of Graces actually comes out in the US sometime soon.

Once the good fan translation for Phantasia PSX releases the final-final version, I'll probably pick up a copy of that on eBay.

I spent $40 on Destiny & $65 on Eternia... so I understand where you are coming from.
You're weird, indeed: I can't help but shape some opinion for every single stuff I play/watch/listen to....
