I love games, and really love RTS games.

However, life takes precedence, and I missed first time round the games Rise of Nations and Rise of Nations Legends.

I was wondering what people think of these 2 games now we have moved on several years.

Are they still worth buying and playing? (stability on ops systems opinion would be nice)

Is a copy of Rise of Nations Legends available as official download cheaply ? (Nations + Expansion is cheap at £5 these days)

As stated, I missed them on release because I had a house and bills to play, but now in this climate, I am contemplating getting Nations and If I can a good legit copy of Legends if cheap enough

I am in the UK with a 64bit Win 7 system.
Still worth playing? - Yes.

Worth buying? - Not sure. Probably yes.

Having played both on my 64-bit Windows 7 OS, I say that, yes, definitely play them. They work fine.
As for buying, idk. I bought RoL a while back, but I recently picked up RoN Gold b/c my original got lost. I paid about $10 for it. I'd say YES if you can pick them both up for about $5
Just buy them. It has been a few months, but I've also played Rise of Nations in the past year. When I did, the multiplayer was still very strong: be sure to check it out. If the gamespy servers are down, there are also other services like Gameranger which are used a lot.
Thanks guys, based on this thread so far, I have purchased Rise of Nations Gold on the Ubisoft label for £5, as back in the day the reviews were good, it looks still ok from the images listed on Yahoo images and Youtube and its listed in the 1001 games you must play before you die.

Rise of legends (2006) is harder to find as a legit digital download from Steam, Microsoft Games, Ubisoft websites and when I did find a purchasable copy its still in the £15 bracket or used at £10 which although not well over the top, I would have thought it would have dropped to budget by now especially when Age of Empires III is a sub £10 game

Thanks again all, The stability issue is still a sticky point, with Age of mythology being nigh on impossible to play on a Win 7 system I have heard. but I take it Rise of Nations has no stability issues from some of your comments and Rise of Legends probably follows suit I am guessing

Thanks Again

continue to post any thoughts or feelings on this, and if you know where a legit version of legends is please post it

I am in the UK remember
I missed the boat of RoN. I think what it is is that I prefer a standard campaign ala AOE or Empire Earth. RoN is really just a series of skirmishes which if you love that format than the other questions are moot. Even for a non-fan like myself the game STILL looks great, sounds great, and plays great, so if you love a good skirmish I think you'd be a fool to pass on it. Shit, if I was a skirmish fan I really wouldn't even worry about a price range, it would be worth it.

As it is my rom copy sits here collecting dust. If you ever make it to the Keweenaw look me up and I'll give it to you. :D

A word of warning about Rise of Legends, apparently the update servers have been put down for good a long time ago:

And naturally the publisher apparently never offered a stand-alone patch to make your game fully up to date. But at least when that thread took place, I was able to find and use an unofficial offline patch for my RoL.

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/rise_of_legends_auto_update_issues_drove_me_mad_today/post32

Unfortunately, the link to that offline patch does not seem to work anymore. But maybe it is somewhere else. If all else fails, send me PM, I have it somewhere too.

BTW, how do you feel about Rise of Nations (the first one)? I have the Gold version, and I would otherwise probably love the game, but the damn time limits in the missions irritate me. I am still stuck in the very first mission, simply because I never could beat the enemy in time, after many retries. (Yes, playing in the hardest difficulty.)

Interesting

I can only state what I have read in regards to Age of Mythology, I heard It was terrible to get the game stable on a Win 7 system, stating crashes or just not loading at all. After several forum pages of such writing you sort of give up reading any more, but maybe I should re-look at this and see if stability was just a minor group

Now Sid Mair's Locomotion type game was a pig to get stable if I remember. It was a fan patch that plugged the 3gig memory leak that helped there I believe

Thanks again for the comment

Thankyou for your thoughts and the links you provided

As soon as my game arrives and is installed and played I will give you some feedback.

By then all the other members will have given you some feedback also, so I look forward to a nice read :-)

On a side note for AOM from earlier -

Just unwrapped the Ubisoft budget version of the game and installed it - Title page etc loaded fine

Crashed after 10 mins of a campaign, tutorial was fine.

Will look at forums now to see what others did to rectify

I still look for Rise of Legends :-)
Well a plea

If any of the wonderful people here see a digital download site that's legit and has Rise Of Legends in a sale I am interested and post it here please

Closest I have found is GAME which I have placed the game on Stock Alert

Cheers all and happy gaming

I checked the link and thread

I had similar issues as yourself in regards to finding patches to old games as well as following other peoples advice on links to other patch sites

I haven't purchased RON Rise of legends yet, as I am sure a better bargain of the game is somewhere on the internet, but I will PM you if that's ok if I need that file patch. That was very generous of you

Kindest Regards
Well I got most of my answers I guess, And I now have Rise of Nations

I installed it, found the ini file and changed the resolution to suit my monitor's higher definition

Started the tutorial

Ahhhh, not bad, a sort of Civilisation but in real time.

I liked the tier system of research, reminded me of Age of Empires 3, although RON was earlier to use it.

After tutorial and after looking at the different ages with planes and tanks, I played the game proper.

Wow, nice 2 hour battle, went immediately for trying to get territory as a win strategy

Overall - I can see the popularity in this game and yes it deffo holds up now

Enjoying it - well worth £5 of anyone's money

Cheers everyone - I think I will increase my search for ROL now

If you are looking for a digital download of RoL, I don't think it is re-released as such. So at the moment you'd have to hunt down for some back catalog or second-hand (Ebay).

IIRC, there might have been rumors of either it and/or RoN appear on Steam, but no idea. And I would find it highly irritating if they re-released up-to-date RoL on some digital service, but still didn't offer an official offline patch for the original retail version.
