I've had an eye on Killing Floor for some time, but I've never gotten around to buying it. Due to a recent sale, I'm tempted to buy it. There's a problem, though. I'm not much of a multiplayer guy.

So I pose to you a question: Is Killing Floor worth purchasing if I am only going to play by myself?

Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

As far as I remember, no. "Single player" in that game is exactly the same as multiplayer - basically, you're set loose on a map and hordes of monsters attack you. In the end, it's just like a shooting gallery, and team cooperation is the only thing that makes the game fun for a while.

And since there were no bots and I don't think they added any, playing alone is just no fun at all. Even with bots, it wouldn't improve much, tough.

In a word, no. The single player is just the multiplayer but all on your own, making it feel rather pointless.

Having said that, Killing Floor was the game that got me into multiplayer shooters. Before Killing Floor, I was a single player only person. So if you get it, you might find you enjoy the multiplayer anyway.
I like Left 4 Dead offline but I do not like Killing Floor offline at all. It's more arenas rather than levels, and without partners the difficulty is annoying.
I prefer Killing Floor to Left 4 Dead and I find 'singleplayer' enjoyable. Depends on your map really.
Killing Floor is a totally different game solo as zombies can spawn where ever a player is not looking. You'll be constantly on the run and kiting like mad. Playing with humans you'll tend to be much more stationary.

Solo can be fun but coop is really this game's reason for being.

I'm not much of a multiplayer guy either, but I still love to play Killing Floor multiplayer, and I've made a few friends doing so as well. I highly recommend giving the multiplayer a chance. You don't even have to interact with the other players if you really don't want, most games now I just lone wolf, but of course that takes some practice.
Thanks for the replies. I'm now seriously debating whether I should get the game. Can anyone think of any comparisons (excluding Left 4 Dead)? The zombie mode thingy in the more recent Call of Duty games, perhaps? I found that fairly enjoyable by myself. I also like Battlefield 1942 and Quake 3 singleplayer, despite them seeming somewhat pointless when played in singleplayer.

I'm mainly trying to get a better idea of why the singleplayer isn't that great.

Screw the SP, one thing this game HAS got going is one hell of a community. When people talk about PC gamers being more mature (rare cases), I point to KF. There are a lot of incredibly helpful and funny people on the game. Add to that a great deal of community driven feedback on patches and updates. Though I liked the L4D series, the community is one that can be summed up in one word: shitstain. Vulgar, competitive to the point of abolishing sportsmanship, angry, whiny and advertising that they are nothing but a bunch of basement dwellers, even COOP has been infected by the gunk.

L4D is incredibly easy as well, KF IS a survival wave 'type' game, but has a very good scalability difficulty wise and higher levels do offset the gulf Hard or suicidal poses. People communicate in KF, whilst in L4D, you'll be lucky if one person does not actively ignore you.

The good news is that KF is very beginner friendly, there are plenty of servers for a novice like you. Only four waves, weak enemies, no super end boss and you can ask for all the help you want, people will be glad to answer. I really don't like the steam forums much, but the KF section is very well behaved and full of people that are willing to help. If you wish you can make a few threads and further collect even MORE reasons to buy the game.

SP is basically practice mode, which is why it 'sucks. But I don't think so since you can get a feel of the levels, guns and how much money you gain from each enemy kill. Before embarking online. Every official map is accessible offline to practice tactics, weapons, booby traps and good defence locations.

Is there any story to the game? Nope, the game is a pure survival shooter. Enemies attack in waves, you get to build your levels and classes up ( which are well integrated by the way) kill them all and the level is ended. That's it. I think you can also build up your class levels offline as well, though I haven't played for a long, long time, so I can be wrong.

The level AND server mods are insane as well, 50 man DOOM 2 playthroughs are something to be experienced. In fact I only usually play on 50 man servers now, since they can be incredibly fun and funny.

I do think KF is the perfect online shooter for beginners, since the system it uses is rewarding, the difficulty levels satisfying and challenging, the levels very well designed and the community amazing.

The only thing that needs saying about L4D is that L4D accommodates single player. Now I'm not saying Killing Floor is a bad game. It's just a multiplayer game, that's all. Buying it for single player is like buying a car just for the cup holder... which doesn't hold drinks very well.

Wow, thanks for the in-depth reply. You've given me hope, you have. It sounds like a good game to get me into more multiplayer...

One problem I have, though, is that my playing can be sporadic. I'll have to pause a game for a while to do something (like laundry) or I'll have to go somewhere real quick-like. When it comes to multiplayer, I occasionally find myself having to quit playing, and for a co-op game, that seems kind of... unfair. I almost feel like I'm letting my teammates down. I don't know, maybe I'm just weird that way.

Of course, most of my past multiplayer experience came from Halo 3, which slightly punishes you for quitting mid-match. That might be part of the reason. I don't know. I'm just weird.

Again, though, thank you. I am reconsidering buying the game.

Not really. I'd love to elaborate in detail but the game is just fundamentally a co-op game. It would be even less fun than L4D single player. Unless you like shooting wave after wave of enemy on the lower difficulty settings (extremely difficult if not impossible to survive solo on the harder ones) and even then there are better gaming options for that style of play.
If it were priced at $5 I'd say go get it. It's not bad for a few minutes here and there as a single player game. Especially when there's a custom map such as the one over Christmas which had the custom enemies.

Sadly those don't last long enough to keep any real long term appeal for SP play. If you want to play something like this SP (and you don't have it yet) you'd be better off with Unreal Tournament 2004.

If you have to leave, try to do it in between waves (zombie health and quantity are determined at the beginning of each wave depending on player number). Drop your money and weapons and everything should be cool. Winning teams will almost always be able to afford losing a player. Marginal ones were doomed from the start (not that winning is the point of KF ;).

Also, other than zombies, KF is nothing like L4D.

Games are split into difficulty levels (beginner, normal, hard etc), which tends to sort the people taking the game very seriously from the people who are just having fun and don't mind their teammates going afk or whatever.
