jjsimp: I remember seeing him on some US talk show not too long ago and he seemed to be excited for the next season. I still think it wasn't his idea to leave the show.
I personally liked the theme before Tennant left a lot more. I have no experience with the themes pre-Eccleston, so I can't say if I liked them better than the Tennant version.

StingingVelvet: It's possible he was urged to leave I think. He didn't capture casual viewers like Tennant did and the BBC want to protect their show.

As for themes, McCoy's is my favorite, because god damn I love the 80's.
I have a feeling it was more along the lines of

Matt:Well I've had <film>, <film> and <huge film> offers come up and though I love the show I can't really turn down that big a pay rise
Moffet: Yeah lets see if I can get your pay moved up closer to what tennant got and that way you can stay.
(note: Tennants paycheck per series is close to what the total budget is now... no seriously)
BBC:NO.
Moff: But he's great in the role and we've already got the scripts planned!
BBC: Our hands are tied
Moff: <lots of swearing>

Seriously the BBC charter causes a lot of issues for shows like Dr Who. While the brand is huge and making a pretty good profit the Beeb itself can only take 25% of the profit of BBC WW as a whole (about £180-190million atm) to reinvest in shows, even then Dr Who's licence is a freaking mess which means that the BBC has to fund it internally without those profits... add to that the fee's for the Daleks, K9 and Cybermen and it all becomes a major headache.

Another problem is that the BBC came under a lot of flak for it's stars pay a few years ago and multimillion deals are now frowned upon.

SirPrimalform: I do love the reappearance of the 'face in the nebula' in Matt Smith's most recent intro.

A little recap for those who might not have heard many versions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ1kRxgKft4

My favourite version of the theme is definitely the original (specifically the '67 mix with the twinkly sounds and delay on the bass line).

jjsimp: Thanks for that. Will have to play this on my TV this weekend, as my laptop doesn't do it justice. Didn't realize there were so many variations during the Tennant era. Some of those early ones sounded great though.
The very first on that clip is the pilot version and has a really annoying crash over it at the beginning the second version is the original televised theme.

I love humans sometimes.

ReynardFox: I don't feel ready for a new face yet, 12 sure has a lot to live up to

SirPrimalform: Just think how scary it must have been for Peter Davison (the Fifth Doctor).
Yeah I can only imagine how intimidating those shoes were to fill.
This is a noteworthy rendition of the theme music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdrqdW4Miao

A for effort.

Theta_Sigma: Same here, it was nice to see some homages to classic Who intros. I was more referring to the music and whatnot though. Yeah, I always liked the showing of the face because it always showed that there was more to the Doctor than other Time Lords. Maybe I'm just looking too much into it though.
The new, current opening titles are my joint favourite, rather nicely! The 7th Doctor credits were my favourite beforehand, but it's now a tie between the two of them :) The other new series ones have been ok - I love them regardless just for being the openings to new episodes ;) - but these are the first titles that really stand out for me.

Theme music wise I have less of a clear favourite, almost all of them are great versions of a brilliant theme tune! The only one that didn't quite work for me was the s23 Trial of a Time Lord version, but Big Finish use that on their 6th Doctor stories and it sounds good on there - though I think/ suspect it's tweaked ever so slightly (the Trial version being not quite finished iirc).

Hmm, for tune wise, I have to say I really love the 8th Doctor's theme. It just has this grandiose and almost operatic feel to it.
