Yet another DS release? Been less than a month since we got the DSi XL. And not even that could convince me to buy one. Not when you can still get a next-gen console for virtually the same price.

Agree, I sold my DS because I didn't touch that thing, nothing but crap games and the only good ones were the Contra game and Kirby Super-Star Ultra. Beat those and never touched mine again so why would I buy another? Nintendo lost me since the Gamecube, too much kid oriented material.

Well, the thread is about a Nintendo product...

The DS has loads of good games. Just not a lot of adult-oriented ones, I suppose.

Indeed. Though to be fair, KingofGnG is voicing his opinion regarding Nintendo's portable console.
(Not that a negative opinion adds anything to the thread, but ... yeah)
The thing is, in the current market I find the DS horribly overpriced, and the games even more so. I'm not paying $199 for a DS when I can get a 360 for the same price. And I'm not paying $50 to play Mario's latest escapades in eye-traino vision when I can get any new PC, 360 or PS3 release for the same price.
There's not even anything worthwhile on DSiWare. Why they don't release some of the older NES / SNES classics to be played on the DS boggles the mind. That might finally get me interested in a DS.

That's rather comparing apples to oranges. It's like saying "I'm not getting an iphone when the same amount of cash could get me a desktop pc".
I use my DS a lot, on days when I'm out and about. I don't use it much at all when i'm at home... that's when i use the PC. (though right now i'm using it to learn japanese, so i use the DS for at least 30 minutes every single day).
As for the timing, this DS isn't coming out for another year, and is likely to be a lot more powerful than the current ones. The timing of the announcement is weird, but not the launch of the product itself.
I agree about DS games being overpriced, especially since so many of them suck so badly. A few examples of how they suck (especially compared to the price) are:
Small, simple, ugly clones of casual games like match-3.
Games that try to do more than the platform can handle.
Games with absolutely horrible control schemes.
And then the fact that the DS as a platform is targeted almost exclusively towards kids, but then that is mostly Nintendo just being Nintendo. The few "adult" games that exist tend to overcompensate for this by being as bloody or as sexy as possible, which usually fails miserably on a platform as limited as the DS.

I don't know how it's in Norway, but here in the US when DS games come out they are usually half the price of console or PC games, ie $30 or $35.

What's wrong with family friendly games??

I don't think the games are really overpriced, here in Rome I can find a lot of great DS games for a little price, I recently bought Moon for seven euros and at the same price I could have bought FFIII or Phoenix Wright, all great 'core' exclusives.

Why, nothing, I suppose. But a game aimed specifically at kids is not necessarily a game for the family (a family contains both kids and adults). And basically, there's no such thing as a "family game" on a handheld. It is, pretty much by definition, a one-person game. So the game has to target the person that is holding it, in this case, me.
I, as an adult, am not satisfied with playing only children's games.

I would have to disagree on two points:
1) Definately not only single player. My kids play with and against each other all the time
using the DS wireless and they have great fun. Also, my only multiplayer experience is
with FFIII
2) There are most definately games geared towards the older crowd - Most od wich are
RPG's (My experience) or other scaled down games from the bigger systems (I have
no experience with these)
The DS is definately more suited for kids - especially the DSI with the phota and sound
fun they can have with it. I own one so I can enjoy the RPG remakes.

But that is what I am saying, some games are made for both children and adults, even if they don't have to be playing them at the same time. Or can there be no such thing?

What are the multiplayer contents for FF3 ?

You can unlock some extra stuff if you send mail to other people via wi-fi. Not too sure how it works, but I do know you can unlock an optional boss and the Onion Knight job.

That would require at least two DS's, if I'm not much mistaken. We only have one.

Most of which are tile-based, cutesy JRPG's that I absolutely can't stand. As for the scaled-down games from bigger systems, in my experience, they usually suffer from one or both of the last two things I mentioned initially: trying to be more than the DS can pull off, and/or having absolutely horrible controls.

Oh no, there certainly can. I just don't see many of them. And mostly I find them annoying in little ways. For instance, I'm playing Fossil Fighters at the moment, which has many game mechanics that I like, but sadly also has very childish dialog and cutesy graphics. I try to ignore this, but I do find it annoying. It's the same with Pokemon games. I kind of like the gameplay, but the rest of the game elements are irritating to deal with.
