First off the Ouya will have a retail release in June, Gamestop has the date listed as June 25th on their site.

Also they have already announced plans to do yearly updates/refreshes to the console with the Ouya 2 possibly based on the Tegra 4 chip.

I realize they had a bunch of orders already with Kickstarter, but announcing a new revision is coming before the first one has even shipped sounds like a good way to get people on the fence to skip buying it.

'Cause no one buys iPhones and iPads.

Assuming this ouya will be anywhere near as popular as the iphone and the ipads, yes the OT point is valid..

Popularity differences aside, both of those are general purpose devices where as Ouya is aimed at being a console where people expect a bit more stability. For $100 people shouldn't expect much, but hearing that games will start showing up in a year that need the new revision could turn off casuals which seems to be the mass market Ouya is aiming for.
as expected, this will be a massive failure :)

I'm just saying people seem to have accepted the idea of simple technology devices that they must replace every couple years to get the new shit.

Isn't it a bit like with I-phones. Every year or so there is a new version but most games are backwards compatible. Having said that I would also prefer a two year cycle maybe. Sounds more relaxed.

Yes, two years would be better.

In the end though I agree this thing is a bad idea. People like my girl who buy android games buy them because they're bored on the subway or something, they're not looking to transfer that experience to the TV. And indie gamers are fine with a PC.

If I could place my PC in the living room and connect it to the TV and connect a controller with it that would be perfect but the PC is too big and too noisy for that. Quya could fill this niche. It depends on what it can do (skype, netflix, youtube, facebook, games, ...) and how much it is advertised. I guess they don't have a big budget for that.
Which makes me wonder when the KS backers will receive theirs? (im one of those). I know dev builds were sent out a short while ago....

Sure but do you want to do that for the limited games this will provide? Assuming they follow the Android phone and tablet template anyway. For a "real gamer" I'm not sure there is a draw there like there is for a media PC in the living room.

I shouldn't speak about this stuff though as the whole "want to play games in the living room" desire baffles me and yet most people prefer that, so obviously I am out of touch with the market.

Personally i find it more comfortable than being hunched up with a mouse/keyboard at the desktop pc. Sure some games are controller compatible, but there's something about the console experience that feels different.

Yes, but if they do that every year, then what's the price advantage over a console? You buy a console for probably $200-300 and probably don't replace it for at least 3 years, assuming you're buying new at the beginning of the iteration.

Ouya didn't even wait to finish the KS campaign before backing down on the free games thing by defining free as any game that comes with a demo. If the console also costs this much and needs to be updated every year to play the newest games, I'm not seeing any advantage over a console.

Well I'm not hunched up, I am reclined and relaxed in a very comfortable chair, and I don't have to fight the wife/kids for the TV or listen to their distractions while exploring Skyrim.

Sure, and I have no interest in the thing. I am just saying the market they are targeting is used to buying new hardware every year or two.

I have a decent enough chair, but i guess it depends on how big the room is. Mine is small, so there isn't an option to adjust very much. it's like sitting on a coach seat!

Having to share a screen with others would be irritating, so i can see the benefit of using the pc in another room. But you could do the same with a console. Whichever is the cheaper option :)
