Mnemon: I'd be content with around £12000 / year ($18k / year), if - as stated - equivalent to inflation. I am not particularly materialistic; don't drink and don't particularly like mass events that are expensive. Still as true now at 35 (in a few weeks) as ever. Mind you - despite three first class degrees I've made less on average, yearly, so far. I get by on about £7500 / year.

After some initial investment / saving up the things I really like doing - long-distance hiking / cycling; literature & arts aren't really that expensive.
Respect man! The UK is much more expensive than Romania, but I agree.. about 1500USD/month is enough almost everywhere.

Not here in the US. That would cover my mortgage and groceries only. If I could move out to the sticks, then I might be able to live off that. I require about 4000USD/month after taxes, which would let me contribute to my retirement and still be putting money into savings. I wouldn't turn away more though.
Thankfully, I live in the 'burbs, if I lived in the bigger cities (NY, LA) you would be paying closer to 2500 for a mortgage.

Mortgage is the reason why housing is so expensive in the US (and not only there). But since interest rates for mortgages in my country are horribly high (around 5% in foreign currency like euro and above 8% in local currency) it's better to save money.

Thank you - but then it is also strongly tied to who I am; my preferred lifestyle and interests really just enable me to live like this [I don't have a family and / or partner, nor do I really want either [I ident as asexual] - so I am only really responsible, financially, for myself]. So, I fully understand that this won't necessarily work for everyone. I don't have a mortage to repay, don't have any debts, but - of course - also little to no savings or any security re: pension. I don't know what the future will bring, really - otoh: I've never claimed any state benefits even when eligible. I just never happened to manage to secure that long term non-fixed term / full-time secure job; but am, when I am working generally quite appreciated - and successful - at what I do.
