Being a hardcore and first-person shooter fan, it occurred to me lately racing might be a nice casual passtime for now and then.

I downloaded the Dirt 2 demo as it looks good and has a fun atmosphere to it, but I kept on bumping into the sides of the racingtrack and skidding around as the controls with left and right arrow keys were awkward. It really felt like the game was designed with a steering wheel in mind, where you can steer a bit to the left/right or hard left/right, instead of either pushing or not pushing the left/right arrow key.

For a casual now-and then passtime in a living room with the shelfs already too full of books to accomodate space for racing gear (even if I would be able to get it for a decent price - those things are bulky!), I don't feel like buying a driving gear set.

So what racing games are recommendable for casual play and work well using keyboard+mice?

Thanks in advance (not marked as question, as there's probably more than one good answer).

Same racing recommendations as always. Carmageddon and Flatout.
I've played (and finished) both using only keyboard, though it does take some practice to know when to fully press the arrow, or tap it.

I know this doesn't answer your question exactly, but a gamepad makes a decent substitute for a steering wheel.
Since we are on this site, I will reccommend one of good old games - Ignition. Arcade Racing game that got my attention for hundreds of hours and is even better in multiplayer! If you are looking for something not too outdated, give Trackmania a try.
Just hopping in now to thank for the suggestions, I'll look into them in more depth another day, I'm getting sleepy now and ready for bed.
I don't think I've ever used a wheel and I love racing games. In fact I need a keyboard to play any NFS title.
all of the need for speed games should work fine on keyboards

Blur.
Even Grid, recently added here, plays quite well with keyboard only

Hook up the rom, RC Pro Am!

Yes I know I posted the exact same thing in another thread but it just happens to be one of the greatest racing games ever and you don't need a wheel. Besides, a wheel is too bulky to pick up and throw across the room when you are about to win a race, hit an oil slick, spin out, finish last, game over.

It makes me wonder if I could get to grips with Dirt after all. Practice to know when to fully press or just tap the arrow, plus a thing that occured to me - decelarate in turns, it's what I do with my bike as well after all - would perhaps make Dirt drivable as well? Comparing all suggestions, Dirt delivers the most of what I like: a game where you drive rallies, nice environments, good graphics, with the game being about driving instead of damaging other cars. I can understand it has appeal for some, but blowing up or beating of the track fellow road-users isn't what I seek.

I gave up on the Dirt-demo after 2 tries, but I'll find out if I can get better in it with practice, like JMich did with Carmageddon.

I wonder if a game-pad is worth the buy if it's only for 1 game, what other kind of games get enhanced by using a game-pad?
